BB: Ninth Inning Runs Push UNCW Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY – For the third time in as many days, UNCW used a late inning rally to earn a win over Hofstra. In Sunday's series finale Casey Golden delivered the winning hit, a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning that snapped a 3-3 tie as the Seahawks completed the sweep with a 5-3 win at University Field.

Hofstra fell to 13-22, 3-12 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. UNCW improved to 28-8, 11-1 in league action.

Hofstra jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second as Eric Ferguson and Steven Foster had RBIs. The Seahawks would score a run in the third on a fielder's choice and then tied the game in the fourth on Luke Dunlap's RBI single.

UNCW went ahead, 3-2 in the sixth on a two-out RBI triple from Kennard McDowell on a hit that eluded a diving Foster and rolled to the fence in centerfield. But the Pride were resilient and answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at three on a RBI single by Brian MacDonald that scored David Leiderman.

The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when two singles and a one-out sacrifice put runners at second and third with two down for Golden. The Seahawk centerfielder took a 3-0 pitch from Brendan Mulligan (1-2) and doubled to left center to knock in the go ahead runs. William Shepley (4-0) retired the Pride in order in the ninth and earned the win following two innings of hitless relief.

Mulligan took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Pride starter Nick Kozlowski allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Josh Roberson started for UNCW and allowed three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He was followed by Clay Lockamon (1/3), Austin Magestro (1 1/3) and Shepley, who held the Pride to two hits over the final 3 2/3 innings.

MacDonald was the only Pride player with multiple hits as he recorded two. Golden, Dunlap and Steven Linkous each had two hits for UNCW.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at NJIT (6 p.m.) and then is back home Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to host LIU Brooklyn at 3:30 p.m.
