SB: Hofstra Takes Two Over Elon In CAA Doubleheader

Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley threw a complete-game three-hitter to lift Hofstra to a 4-1 win in the opener and fellow senior Taylor Pirone followed with a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory in the second contest as the Pride swept Elon in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Hofstra improved to 25-10-1 overall and 11-2 in league play in winning the first two meetings against Elon in program history. The Phoenix dropped to 25-15 and 7-7 in league play.

Both Pride starting pitchers allowed just three hits and did not walk a single batter in 14 combined innings. The duo struck out 13 to help Hofstra maintain sole possession of second place in the CAA.

Freshmen Megan Patierno and Brielle Pietrafesa both registered a RBI and scored a run in the first game to support Lashley' s dominant outing. Patierno pulled her sixth home run to left, giving the Pride the early lead in the opening game on a second-inning solo shot. Hofstra staked Lashley to a 4-0 lead in the third when Pietrafesa and senior catcher Erin Trippi keyed a three-run rally.

Junior third baseman Kim Smith worked a one-out walk and sophomore Lacey Clark singled. Pietrafesa then ripped Mitchum's offering down the leftfield line for a RBI single.

That chased Mitchum (8-7) after 2 1/3 innings. Trippi later came through with a clutch two-out single off reliever Caitlin O'Shea that fell despite a diving attempt by Elon rightfielder Emily Cameron. The ball hit Cameron's glove on the lunge and fell to the grass as Pietrafesa and fellow freshman Brittany Allocca scored.

Elon's only run off Lashley came via Hannah Olson's sixth inning solo home run. That was one of just three hits that Lashley allowed as the right-hander won her 14th consecutive decision in improving to 14-1. Lashley struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. She threw 61 of her 88 total pitches for strikes to wrap up the contest in an hour-and-a-half.

Mitchum was charged with four runs, all earned, and five hits. She struck out two and walked one.

Smith continued Hofstra's timely hitting in the second game, taking Elon reliever Kayla Caruso over the left field wall for a two-run shot in the second. Allocca opened the scoring in the first off O'Shea, drawing a bases loaded walk to plate junior Caryn Bailey.

Patierno pulled a hard-hit single to the left side to score Smith for the two-run lead. Caruso entered in relief of O'Shea following the hit and stranded three when Trippi lined out to third. Junior Chloe Fitzgerald's infield single started the second-inning rally by legging out an infield single. Smith's fourth home run extended the lead to 4-0.

Pirone improved to 11-9 by throwing 60 of her 82 pitches for strikes. The New Rochelle, New York product entered the week as the NCAA Division I leader in fewest walks allowed per seven innings and improved her figure by not issuing a free pass in facing 26 batters. She posted her third shutout of the season and the 10th of the season. O'Shea took the loss to fall to 2-3.

Hofstra wore pink uniforms in both games as part of an initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The Pride will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at noon. Hofstra will honor retired coach Bill Edwards with a banner commemorating his 928 career wins. Ceremonies will start approximately a half-hour before the scheduled 12 p.m. first pitch.
