BB: Seventh Inning Rally Lifts UNCW Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Kennard McDowell's three-run home run in the seventh inning put UNCW ahead, 5-3, and the Seahawks went on to a 8-6 win over the Pride Saturday at University Field. The win clinched the series for UNCW with game three still to be played on Sunday.

McDowell's shot, his second of the year, came after Hofstra had gone ahead 3-2 in the sixth on a solo home run from Brett Johnson. The Seahawks put the first two batters of the inning on with a walk and a single, prompting a pitching change as Adam Heidenfelder relieved starter Alec Eisenberg. The freshman's second pitch to McDowell was hit over the left field fence to put UNCW ahead to stay. The Seahawks would add a fourth run in the inning on a sacrifice fly.

Hofstra did fight back and got to within one, 6-5, in the seventh as Ryan Donovan posted a pinch-hit two-run home run. But UNCW scored twice in the eighth on an RBI double from Zach Canada and an RBI single from McDowell to go up 8-5. The Pride got an RBI single from Eric Ferguson in the bottom half of the frame, but that would close out the scoring.

Eisenberg (3-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in six-plus innings. Brian MacDonald went 3-4, Donovan was 2-2 with a home run and a double, Ferguson was 2-3 and David Leiderman went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ryan Foster (4-0) picked up the win for UNCW after allowing five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Jared Gessell pitched the final 1 1/3 to notch his fourth save. McDowell drove in four runs on the day for UNCW to go along with his two hits.

The series concludes Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. start time.
