Brittain Altomare had four points on two goals and two assists, while freshman attacker
Katie Kirk tallied the first three goals of her career to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 10-9 win over Elon on Friday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.
The win moves Hofstra's record to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. In addition, it clinches the top seed for the Pride in the upcoming CAA Championship, to be held at Delaware on May 1 and 3.
The win was Hofstra's fifth straight and is the program's longest since a similar five-game streak in 2009.
Elon fell to 8-7 and 1-4 in conference play with the loss.
Altomare added a game-high seven draw controls to her game-high point total. Junior midfielder
Becky Conto added two goals and an assist for the Pride.
Hofstra would struggle in the opening 30 minutes as the Pride went into the break trailing Elon, 6-3. Despite outshooting the Phoenix, 16-8, before halftime Elon would lead by three as Stephanie Asher had two goals and an assist.
The Pride scored first in the contest as sophomore attacker
Tiana Parrella scored off a feed from Altomare at the 25:25 mark to give Hofstra the early advantage. The Phoenix would score twice to take a 2-1 lead before Altomare added her first goal of the game with 19:08 showing on the clock to knot the score at two.
At that point, Asher took over and scored back-to-back unassisted goals to start a 3-0 Elon run that made it 5-2 with 10:51 left in the opening stanza.
The two squads would alternate goals over the final 7:30 of the first half to allow Elon to take the three-goal lead into intermission.
Elon would take its largest lead of the game at 8-4 with 22:25 remaining in regulation as Anna Vitton scored for the Phoenix.
At that point, the Pride would begin to mount a comeback. Conto started a 3-0 run with consecutive goals and then Altomare closed the run for Hofstra with an unassisted goal with 17:09 to play. That goal made it 8-7 before the Phoenix regained some breathing room with another Asher goal with 10:21 showing on the clock.
Kirk would continue to star in her coming out party as the Bay Shore, NY native scored her third goal of the contest with 6:45 left to bring the Pride back to within one at 9-8.
The game would go down to the wire with Hofstra holding for a long possession in the closing minutes and it would prove to be successful as sophomore attacker
Morgan Knox scored off an assist from Altomare with 51 seconds remaining to make it 10-9 in favor of the Pride. It marked Hofstra's first lead since an early 1-0 advantage and would eventually be the game-winner.
Junior defender
Lindsey Alfano finished with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control for Hofstra, while Knox and freshman midfielder
Amanda Seekamp each had a goal and an assist for the Pride. Freshman midfielder
Carolyn Carrera led the Pride with three caused turnovers.
Asher tallied three goals and an assist for Elon, while also adding five draw controls. Molly Garrigan also had three goals for the Phoenix. Rachel Ramirez was stellar in net for Elon as she made 14 saves.
Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Long Island rival Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
