BB: Late Home Run Lifts UNCW Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Casey Golden's two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning snapped a 6-6 tie and lifted the UNCW Seahawks to an 8-7 win over Hofstra Friday at University Field.

The win, UNCW's eighth straight, improved the Seahawks record to 26-8 overall and 9-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra saw its two-game win streak halted and fell to 13-20 overall and 3-10 in league play.

The Pride trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but scored four times and tied the score on Brian MacDonald's three-run home run. David Leiderman drove in the first run in the inning with an infield single. The RBI was his 18th in the last six games.

But UNCW took the lead for good in the eighth. With one out, Pride reliever Brendan Mulligan hit Zach Shields with a pitch. Chris Weiss came on to relieve Mulligan and gave up Golden's fourth home run of the season.

Hofstra rallied for one run in the bottom of the inning as Brett Johnson and Brian MacDonald led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and Chris Hardardt followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-7. But Hofstra could not get the tying run home.

Dalton Rouleau paced an 11-hit showing by the Pride with three hits, a run and an RBI. Johnson had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored twice. MacDonald had two hits and three RBIs.

Mulligan (1-1) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. He also struck out three batters.

Steven Linkous had four hits on the day, while Luke Dunlap added three. Golden had two hits and three RBIs. Jordan Ramsey (3-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits in three strikeouts.

Game two of the series is Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
