SB: Hofstra Downs LIU In Five Innings

Hempstead, N.Y. – Freshman Brielle Pietrafesa's two-run homer keyed a Hofstra six-run third inning and senior Morgan Lashley threw a complete-game two-hitter in the Pride's 8-0 win over LIU Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Pietrafesa, junior third baseman Kim Smith and freshman Megan Patierno all drove in two runs to help shorten the game to five innings due to the run rule. Hofstra won for the sixth consecutive game in improving to 23-9-1. LIU fell to 14-23.

Lashley (13-1) won her 13th consecutive decision in striking out five and not allowing a walk. The right-hander needed just 54 pitches and threw 43 strikes in posting her seventh shutout of the season. Hofstra has blanked nine opponents this season.

Patierno's second-inning sacrifice fly plated Pietrafesa with the game's first run. Pietrafesa scored two runs total as Hofstra batted its three freshmen consecutively for the second straight game. Pietrafesa, Brittany Allocca and Patierno hit 5-6-7 and each reached base twice and drew four combined walks.

Hofstra sent 10 batters to the plate in the second against Shelley Procter, who threw all four innings for the complete game in falling to 5-13. All eight runs against her were earned as the Pride registered nine hits and drew six walks without striking out. Procter threw 93 pitches.

Six straight batters reached and scored to start the third inning. Sophomore Michaela Transue walked and junior Chloe Fitzgerald singled to put two runners on for Hofstra leading hitter Caryn Bailey. The team's centerfielder, who hit .600 in the Pride's 5-0 week, continued her hot hitting by driving in Transue on a single up the middle. Sophomore Lacey Clark's RBI single extended the rally and Pietrafesa smashed her sixth home run to left for a 7-0 lead.

Hofstra put the run-rule in effect when Patierno drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth. Lashley ended the game in the bottom of the inning, inducing a foul out and striking out the last two batters.
It was the second straight year Hofstra defeated LIU in a run-rule. The Pride bested the Blackbirds, 12-0, on the road in five innings in 2014.

Lashley has not lost since Opening Day on Feb. 13 against Central Arkansas.

Hofstra will resume an 11-game homestand on Thursday with a 4 p.m. matchup versus Stony Brook.
