SB: Hofstra’s Winning Streak Snapped By Stony Brook

Hempstead, N.Y. – Stony Brook's Jane Sallen threw a complete-game three-hitter and Lexie Shue hit a two-run home run as Hofstra fell, 4-0, to the Seawolves Thursday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Senior pitcher Taylor Pirone threw a complete game and struck out eight without walking a batter for the Pride in the non-conference game. But Hofstra still saw its six-game winning streak snapped in falling to 23-10-1. Stony Brook improved to 19-12.

Sallen struck out six and walked just one, needed 80 pitches in seven innings to improve to 12-7. The left-hander did not allow a Hofstra batter to reach third.

Stony Brook supported Sallen and broke a scoreless tie in the third. Melissa Phelan's one-out single-up-the-middle brought up Shue, who pulled a 1-1 pitch over the leftfield wall. Her fourth home run made it 2-0, and the Seawolves added an unearned run in the fourth that scored Shayla Giosia. Hofstra committed four errors in the game.

Alexandra Pisciotta's RBI ground out in the seventh provided an additional insurance run. Sallen threw 55 of her pitches for strikes in facing 25 total batters.

Pirone limited Stony Brook to five hits and gave up three earned runs. The right-hander entered the game the NCAA Division I leader in fewest walks per seven innings and did not issue a base on balls despite throwing 117 pitches and facing 30 batters. But Pirone took the loss in dropping to 10-9.

Stony Brook's Bria Green entered hitting .452 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs in 30 games. But Pirone won the individual matchup in holding the right fielder to an 0-for-4 showing with a strikeout and a ground out.

Junior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald went 1-for-3 to extend her team-leading hitting streak to 13 games. Junior Kim Smith also went 1-for-3 for a six-game streak.

Hofstra will resume Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday in a 2 p.m. home doubleheader versus Elon.
