WLAX: Hofstra Stays In First Place With Dramatic Double Overtime Win At Towson

Towson, Md. – Senior attacker Brittain Altomare scored 2:54 into double overtime to lift Hofstra to a dramatic 8-7 double-overtime win over Towson in the longest game of the season on Sunday afternoon at Unitas Stadium.

Altomare posted two goals and three assists and junior defender Lindsey Alfano notched a hat trick to help Hofstra improve to 9-4 and maintain first place in the Colonial Athletic Association at 4-0. The game featured a dramatic second overtime period as Towson's Andi Raymond appeared to score the game-winning goal 16 seconds in, but the officials waved off the goal. The Tigers went from potentially earning a share of first place to falling to 7-6 and 2-2.

Senior goalie Kelsey Gregerson registered 10 saves, which marked the third time this season she reached double digits. Gregerson did not allow a goal in the final 33:57 and forced a key Towson turnover on the team's final possession of the first overtime period to extend the game.

Towson's Samantha Brookhart's hat trick led the Tigers and goalie Kelsea Donnelly's eight saves fostered a compelling duel with Gregerson. The team's only combined for three second-half goals, as Hofstra sophomore attacker Tiana Parrella and Towson's Paige Duncan exchanged goals 59 seconds apart to keep the Tigers ahead, 7-6. Alfonso's third goal of the contest with 21:57 left off Parrella's feed tied the score and marked the final goal in regulation.

Hofstra's first overtime game of the season saw a deliberate pace as both teams searched for patient opportunities. Alfano fired an on-target shot that Donnelly saved. Donnelly also stymied Sam Lenox's shot in the first overtime period. Towson did not record a shot on goal in the six minutes of the first overtime.

Despite long stretches of no goals in the later stages of the game, the first 30 minutes feature a more freewheeling attack. Hofstra scored five goals on its first six shots and was 5-for-5 on shots-on-goal through the opening 20 minutes. Alfano scored two goals on two shots in opening half, though Brookhart's hat trick through the opening period staked the Tigers to a 6-5 lead at the break.

Alfano scored just 5:30 in, though Towson scored twice in seven seconds. Duncan and Brookhart went back-to-back in the short span following a draw-control win. Altomare's first goal 33 seconds later knotted the score at 2. After going down by a goal, Morgan Knox, Alfano and Amanda Seekamp scored consecutive goals for Hofstra for the 5-3 edge before the Tigers ended the half by tallying three straight goals in the final 9:36, capped by Brookhart's third goal.

Hofstra will next be in action on Friday with a key CAA road game at Elon starting at 5 p.m.
