SB: Hofstra’s Power Display Leads To CAA Series Sweep Over Drexel

Philadelphia – Juniors Kim Smith and Caryn Bailey hit solo home runs and freshman Megan Patierno drilled a two-run shot to power Hofstra to a 10-1 win over the Dragons in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday afternoon from Drexel Softball Field at Vidas Athletic Complex.

Hofstra hit two home runs as part of a four-run fifth inning that broke a 1-all deadlock. The Pride won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 22-9-1 overall and 9-2 in CAA play. Eight Hofstra home runs in the series helped the Pride extend its winning streak over Drexel to 28 games dating to 2006. The Dragons fell to 13-15 and 3-8.

Senior Morgan Lashley limited Drexel to one run in four innings to win her 12th consecutive decision. Lashley struck out two and walked one. Leticia Matsuoka's fourth inning leadoff home run was the only run the righty allowed improving to 12-1. Fellow senior Taylor Pirone threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for her third save.

Matsuoka's solo shot tied the score at one. But Hofstra responded in the fifth, starting with Smith's leadoff home run to left-center. Following Smith's third home run of the year, sophomore Lacey Clark doubled down the leftfield line. Hofstra's three freshmen, who were batting fifth-through-seventh in the lineup, all made positive contributions. Brielle Pietrafesa singled to put runners on the corners and Brittany Allocca lifted a sacrifice fly. Patierno hit a two-run home run that sailed almost directly over the 205-foot sign in center to chase Drexel starter Taylor Lee (10-10) for the 5-1 edge.

Pietrafesa made her first career start batting fifth and notched her first career three-hit game in going 3-for-5. Eight of Hofstra's nine starters recorded at least one hit.

Junior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald, Bailey, Smith, Clark and Pietrafesa all logged three hits. Hofstra pounded out 20 hits total.

Bailey, the game's second batter, hit her team-leading ninth home run off Lee, taking the right-hander's offering to the opposite field. Her line drive over the left-center wall staked Lashley to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.

Bailey drilled her fourth home run in five games and went deep for a second consecutive game against the Dragons. Her 25th career homer moved her into sole possession of sixth on the program's all-time list and is two behind Lisa Wambold (2003-06) for fifth. Bailey has 11 RBIs in her last five games after going 3-for-4, scoring two runs and walking once.

Hofstra scored five insurance runs in the seventh. Junior Danielle Bitts hit a two-run double one inning after coming in as a defensive replacement a first. The leftfield line shot marked her first RBIs since March 6 versus Bethune-Cookman.

Hofstra will next be in action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a home non-conference game versus LIU Brooklyn from Hofstra Softball Stadium. The Pride will then play Stony Brook in a 4 p.m. game the following day.
