BB: Strong Pitching, Defense Leads Hofstra Past Towson

Hempstead, NY - Alec Eisenberg went six solid innings on the mound and Bowie Matteson closed out the final three innings as Hofstra posted a 5-4 win over Towson Saturday afternoon at University Field. The win evened the Colonial Athletic Association series at one game apiece heading into Sunday's finale.

Eisenberg allowed three runs on seven hits in his six innings of work. He walked one and struck out four in improving to 3-2 on the season. Matteson allowed three hits and a ninth-inning run in picking up his third save of the year.

Hofstra did most of its damage in the third inning when it scored four runs. Steven Foster got things rolling with a one-out single and went to second on a passed ball. Brad Witkowski followed with a single that scored Foster. The throw home allowed him to move to second on the play. After a groundout moved Witkowski to third, David Leiderman drove in his fifth run of the series with a single through the left side. Brian MacDonald singled to put runners on first and second, and a balk pushed both into scoring position. Mat Annunziata came through with a two-run single up the middle to make it a 4-0 game.

The Tigers pushed a run across in the fourth on a RBI single by Chris Henze and then got two in the fifth on an RBI double by Mark Grunberg and a run-scoring single from Colin Dyer.

The Pride scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out. Leiderman then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Foster with the Pride's fifth run.

The run proved important because Towson got a leadoff double from Henze in the ninth and three batters later, Brendan Butler drove him home with a single. But Matteson struck out Towson pinch hitter Colin Gimblet with the tying run on first to end the game.

Witkowski finished the day 3-4 with an RBI and a run. Foster was 2-3 with two runs scored. Leiderman and Annunziata both had a hit and two RBIs for the Pride.

Eisenberg and Matteson worked to the strength of the team, its infield defense, inducing 17 groundball outs. The Pride infield also turned two double plays to quell Towson threats.

Grunberg, Dyer, Henze and Butler each had two hits for Towson. Starter Kevin Ross (1-4) allowed five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Matt Golczewski pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed one hit.

The rubber game of the series will take place Sunday at 1 p.m.
