BB: Towson Defeats Hofstra In Wild Series Finale

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored 13 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings, but Towson scored four times in the 10th and held off another Pride rally to post a 20-19 win Sunday at University Field.

The victory gave Towson (9-23-1, 4-8 CAA) the series win over Hofstra (11-19, 3-9 CAA).

The Tigers looked to have the game well in hand with a 16-3 lead over the Pride going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Chris Henze drove in a Towson record nine runs over the first seven innings on 4-5 hitting with a home run, two doubles and a single. Towson scored in six of the first nine innings and eight of the nine Tiger starters had hits.

But Hofstra staged an improbable comeback in its final at bat, torching four Tiger pitchers for 13 runs on nine hits. Consecutive singles to start the inning from Brett Johnson, Chris Weiss and Jake Fallon resulted in one run. Weiss stole home and Fallon took second for a second run. Two walks loaded the bases and Dalton Rouleau followed with an RBI single to end Christian Duclos' day. Austin Clark came on to pitch and Leiderman greeted him with a two-run double. Mat Annunziata followed suit and doubled in two more runs to make it a 16-10 game. A walk to Ryan Donovan was followed by a three-run home run off the bat of Johnson to bring the Pride to within three, 16-13. Garrett Walther relieved Clark and got the first out of the inning with a strikeout of Weiss. After a walk to Fallon, Matt Golczewski came on in relief and gave up an infield single to Steven Foster. Nobody covered third and Fallon was able to advance and put runners on the corners. Louis Carrafiello hit a sacrifice fly for the second out. Rouleau then walked in front of Leiderman, who hit his second two-run double of the inning to tie the score. After an intentional walk to set up force plays at second and third, Golczewski escaped the inning by getting a groundout to first.

While all the momentum seemed to be in Hofstra's favor, the Tigers came right back in the 10th. John Drexel led off against Nick Kozlowski with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Colin Dyer then doubled in Drexel with the go ahead run. After Brendan Mulligan came on in relief, a balk put Dyer at third and he would score on an infield out. Peter Bowles then doubled, went to third on a Chris Bonk wild pitch and scored on an infield single by Spencer Sutton. After another infield single, the Tigers would score a fourth run on an RBI single from Thayer Seely.

Hofstra fought back once more in the bottom of the inning, but came up just short. Chris Weiss and a one-out double and went to third on an infield out. An RBI single from Foster cut the deficit to 20-17. A single from Carrafiello put runners on the corners and a wild pitch plated Foster and moved Carrafiello to second. Rouleau put the Pride within one, 20-19, with a run-scoring single. Leiderman's single put the tying run in scoring position, but Bruce Zimmerman escaped the threat with a strikeout to end the game.

The Pride banged out a season-high 21 hits. Rouleau and Leiderman each had four hits on the day. Johnson and Foster recorded three hits, while Weiss had two. Leiderman drove in a career-high five runs and Johnson added three.

Kozlowski (1-4), the seventh of nine Hofstra pitchers, took the loss for the Pride, allowing two runs in a third of an inning. Golczewski (1-3) was the pitcher of record on the winning side.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday when it hosts NYIT at 3:30 p.m.
