WLAX: Stellar Defensive Effort Leads Hofstra To 6-5 Win Over Delaware

Newark, DE – The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team won its third straight game as the Pride captured a 6-5 victory over Delaware on Friday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

Both squads came into the game receiving votes in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Top 20 poll.

The Pride played strong defense throughout the contest as Hofstra held the Blue Hens to their second-lowest scoring output of the season in taking over sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Offensively, senior attacker Brittain Altomare continued her offensive onslaught this season as she had two goals and two assists to lead all scorers. She also had a game-high five draw controls. Senior defender April Iannetta had three draw controls, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a pair of goals.

The win improves the Pride's record to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in CAA play. Delaware falls to 9-5 and 2-1 in league action. It was Hofstra's first win over Delaware since a 13-9 win over the Blue Hens in 2012.

Delaware scored three of the first four goals in the contest to take a 3-1 lead with 18:06 to play before intermission following a goal from Kristen Hale. The Pride's lone goal during the first 13-plus minutes of the game came of the stick of freshman midfielder Amanda Seekamp at the 25:38 mark.

Down two goals early on, the Pride responded and the duo of Iannetta and Altomare teamed up to make it 3-2 with 16:18 showing on the clock. The assist marked the 49th consecutive game that Altomare has scored at least a point.

After a scoring drought of nearly 12 minutes for both squads, Altomare would even the score at three with an unassisted tally with under five minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

Hofstra would take a one-goal lead into halftime as Iannetta scored her second of the half with 4:10 showing on the clock. The ability of the Pride to earn the halftime advantage was due in large part to their defense as Hofstra held Delaware without a goal over the final 18 minutes of the first half.

Delaware would retake a one-goal advantage with the first two goals of the second stanza, including a tally from Shannon Hawley that made it 5-4 in favor of the Blue Hens.

Sophomore attacker Tiana Parrella would knot the score at five for the Pride with 17:58 left in regulation before Altomare scored her second of the game at the 12:24 mark to put Hofstra back in front at 6-5.

The Altomare goal would prove to be the game-winner as the Pride defense clamped down once again and heled Delaware without a goal over the final 19-plus minutes of the second half to capture the win. For Altomare it is her fifth game-winning goal of the season.

Senior goalie Kelsey Gregerson had eight saves in the game, while freshman midfielder Shea McAvoy tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover. Junior defenders Lindsey Alfano and Shelby Milne each notched a pair of caused turnovers in the contest.

Casey Lyons led Delaware with a goal and an assist. Caitlin McCartney had four ground balls, two caused turnovers, along with a goal and a draw control.

Hofstra returns to action when it heads to Towson on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
