BB: Hofstra Falls In Series Opener To Towson

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra recorded 16 hits on the day, including four by David Leiderman, but Towson outslugged the Pride, 13-8, in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series Friday evening at University Field.
 
The Tigers, which also had 16 hits, improved to 8-22-1 on the year and 3-7 in the CAA. Hofstra fell to 10-18 overall and 2-8 in league play.
 
Leiderman put the Pride on the board in the first inning with a two-run single that plated Brett Johnson and Brad Witkowski. After Towson tied the score in the top of the second, Mat Annunziata put Hofstra back on top with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.
 
The Tigers would go up 4-3 in the third on a two-run single by Richie Blosser, but the Pride would tie the game in the fourth on a fielder's choice grounder by Steven Foster that scored Brian MacDonald.
 
But Towson would take the lead for good in the fifth, scoring three runs. Mark Grunberg led off with a home run and Chris Henze and Blosser each added RBI singles.  Towson would put the game away with a five-run eighth that pushed its advantage to 13-5. Henze provided the big hit in the inning with a two-run double.
 
The Pride scored three runs in the ninth to cut the final margin to 13-8. Leiderman had a two-run double and then scored on a wild pitch.
 
Chris Bonk (2-5) took the loss in relief for the Pride, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings. Freshman Chris Weiss started for the first time this season and allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings. 
 
Bruce Zimmerman pitched the final five innings for Towson and picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. He allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out five.
 
Leiderman finished 4-5 with a career-best four RBIs. MacDonald went 3-4, while Foster, Witkowski, and Chris Hardardt each had two hits.
 
Blosser drove in five runs on the day for Towson, while Henze was 4-4 with three RBIs.
 
Game two of the series will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
