Hempstead, NY - Fairfield's Kyle Dube tossed six innings of four-hit, no run ball and combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout of Hofstra Tuesday afternoon at University Field.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Pride and dropped their overall record to 9-13. Fairfield improved to 5-13 with the win.
Dube and Hofstra starter matched zeroes for the first five innings, each allowing two hits. MacDonald also benefitted from solid defensive play behind him as the Pride turned a double play (three infield and one outfield) in each of the first four innings.
But the Stags got to MacDonald in the sixth as Dean Sadick led off with a double. Following two infield outs sandwiched around a hit batter, the Pride elected to walk Sebastian Salvo with first base open. But the next batter, Brendan Tracy, walked on a 3-2 pitch to force in the first run and Dan Hopkins followed with a three-run double to put the Stags up 4-0.
Fairfield would take a 6-0 lead in the eighth as pinch-hitter Billy Zolga homered on the first pitch he saw from
Kevin Weissheier.
Dube struck out six and walked none to up his mark to 2-1. Reliever Gavin Wallace pitched 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, while Tyler Duggan allowed no hits over the final inning and a third.
MacDonald (1-2) allowed four runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Alec Eisenberg and
Patrick Bryant threw scoreless innings of relief for the Pride.
Offensively for Hofstra,
Chris Weiss and
Ryan Donovan each had a double in three at-bats, while
Dalton Rouleau was on base twice with a single and a walk.
Hofstra returns to action Friday at CAA-leading College of Charleston. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.Â
