WLAX: Hofstra Nearly Upsets No. 18 Ohio State

Columbus, OH – Senior attacker Brittain Altomare posted a game-high seven points on two goals and five assists to lead a spirited effort but the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team fell short in their attempt at knocking off No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon as the Pride dropped a 12-11 decision to the Buckeyes.

The loss drops the Pride's record to 5-4 this season, while Ohio State improves to 10-2. It marks the third straight year that the game between Hofstra and Ohio State has been decided by one goal with the Buckeyes capturing all three games.

Senior defender April Iannetta led Hofstra with four goals, establishing a new career-high for the talented Wantagh, New York native.

The Pride's first two goals of the contest would come off the sticks of junior defender Lindsey Alfano and sophomore attacker Tiana Parrella and Hofstra and Ohio State would be knotted at two nearly nine minutes into the game.

Ohio State would score back-to-back goals to make it 4-2 following an unassisted tally from Katie Chase at the 18:31 mark.

Hofstra would respond at that point and the Pride scored four of the next five goals in the game to turn a two-goal deficit into a one-goal advantage with less than 12 minutes left before intermission. The run was powered by two goals and an assist from Altomare and freshman midfielder Amanda Seekamp notched her first of the game to make it 6-5 with 11:37 left in the opening stanza.

Chase would score again for the Buckeyes before halftime to even the score at six at the break.

The Pride would stay hot to open the second stanza as Iannetta scored twice, both off Altomare assists, and Hofstra would open its largest lead of the game, 8-6, with nearly six minutes gone in the half.

A goal from Ohio State's Jennifer Porretto make it 8-7 before senior attacker Sam Lenox gave the Pride back a two-goal lead at the 15:44 mark.

The nationally-ranked Buckeyes would take control at that point as Ohio State would score four straight goals to retake a two-goal advantage. The four goals came from four different scorers with Jackie Cifarelli assisting on a pair of goals during the run.

With time running down, the Pride had one last run in them as Iannetta made it 11-10 OSU with 6:39 to play. After Ohio State made it 12-10 with less than three minutes left, Iannetta found the back of the net for the fourth time in the game with an unassisted tally at the 1:49 mark. That would be as close as the Pride could get as they fell in the tight contest.

Iannetta added a game-high six draw controls, while Altomare had four. Senior goalie Kelsey Gregerson had five saves, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Lenox finished with two goals and one assist for the Pride.

Cifarelli dished out five assists for Ohio State, while Chase and Mary Kate Facchina each tallied three goals. Emily Valli and Taylor Donahue had four ground balls, while Valli had a pair of caused turnovers. Tori DeScenza had five saves and two ground balls for the Buckeyes.

Hofstra returns to action next Friday when it hosts James Madison in its Colonial Athletic Association opener at 7 p.m. The Dukes were ranked No. 13 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Top 20 poll.
