Hempstead, NY – Senior attacker
Brittain Altomare had four goals and one assist for a game-high five points, while senior goalie
Kelsey Gregerson had nine saves and five ground balls to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a commanding 13-8 win over #14 (IWLCA) James Madison on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The Pride dominated the Dukes in the second stanza as they used a 7-0 scoring run to turn 6-5 deficit into a 12-6 advantage en route to the five-goal victory.
The win improves Hofstra's record to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. James Madison falls to 8-4 and 0-1 in league action.
It is Hofstra's first victory over a ranked opponent since a 10-9 win over #17 Notre Dame on March 27, 2011.
With her five points in the game, Altomare has now scored at least a point in 47 consecutive games.
An entertaining first half saw the two teams head to the break knotted at five. The Pride scored the first two goals of the game as Altomare and junior midfielder
Becky Conto scored for Hofstra to put the Pride ahead early on.
The Dukes would score three straight goals, culminating with a tally from Jaci Gordon, to earn a 3-2 advantage at the 14:44 mark.
After a nearly six-minute scoring drought for both teams, sophomore attacker
Morgan Knox scored for the Pride to even the score at three.
The final 8:26 of the opening stanza would see the two teams alternate scoring with a goal from Altomare closing the first half scoring at the 3:47 mark and sending the teams into intermission tied at five.
James Madison opened the second half at the 29:22 mark as Taylor Gress gave the Dukes a 6-5 lead.
At that point Hofstra would completely take over as the Pride scored seven straight goals to take a 12-6 lead with less than seven minutes to play. Altomare and sophomore attacker
Tiana Parrella each had a pair of goals during the run, which saw seven different players tally a point for the Pride.
The Dukes were unable to rebound from the Hofstra onslaught as they were only able to cut the Pride lead to four late in the contest before Hofstra ended up winning 13-8 following a goal from Knox with less than two minutes remaining.
Draw controls played a key role in the outcome for the Pride as Hofstra won just two of 11 draws in the opening 30 minutes before winning nine of 12 after the break.
Hofstra got huge games out of Knox and Parrella as the pair each contributed two goals and two assists to the Pride's efforts.
Conto added two goals, two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover for the Pride, while senior defender
April Iannetta had four ground balls, three draw controls, three caused turnovers, along with a goal and an assist.
Altomare led all players with six draw controls, while Conto added a pair.
Betsy Angel led James Madison with three goals, while Gordon and Brooks Lawler each had two goals. Stephanie Finley had two draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Dukes, while Kaci Starkloff picked up four ground balls.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it hosts William & Mary at 1 p.m.
