SB: Hofstra Extends Winning Streak With Doubleheader Sweep Over Towson

Hempstead, N.Y. – Freshman Brielle Pietrafesa smashed two home runs as part of a nine-run second inning in the first game to lift Hofstra to a 14-6 victory in the first game and a 6-4 win over Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Hofstra extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games in improving to 15-7-1 and 6-0 in CAA play. The Pride swept the three-game set from Towson, which fell to 10-14 and 0-6 against the league after also being swept by James Madison in the conference-opening series.

Pietrafesa and fellow freshman Megan Patierno hit back-to-back home runs in the second off Towson starter Miss McCormick to start the cold afternoon that saw game times temperatures in the low 30-degree range. Pietrafesa, Patierno and Brittany Allocca – the three freshmen in the starting lineup – all homered in the first game.

Patierno, who did not hit a home run through her first nine career games, hit one in each end of a doubleheader, including a two-run shot in the fifth inning of a second game to break a 4-all tie and put Hofstra ahead. Senior pitcher Taylor Pirone earned the win in both games to improve to 6-6. The New Rochelle, New York native threw three scoreless innings of relief in the second game to bring her record back to .500.

Hofstra sent 12 batters to the plate in the opener's second-inning barrage. Pietrafesa's second at-bat of the inning looked similar to her first, as she pulled another homer to left, this time off reliever Ambar Hickman, for a three-run shot. It was the most Hofstra runs in an inning this season, besting the previous high of eight set against Iowa on Feb. 21. Hofstra scored the most runs in an inning against a CAA opponent since scoring eight runs in the third inning at Delaware on April 19, 2014.

Hofstra scored 12 straight runs after falling behind, 3-0, in the first. Tateum Valentine's two-run single capped the Tigers' three-spot in the opening inning. But Pirone did not allow a run after that inning and gave up six hits and just two earned runs to get the win.

The Pride supported Pirone and got back two runs in the first on Kim Smith's RBI single. Junior Chloe Fitzgerald and Smith both scored in the inning, bringing the Pride within one run before the nine-run second. Patierno hit her first career home run in the inning and Pietrafesa followed with her first long ball of the inning.

Hofstra was up 12-3 entering the fifth with the run rule i tact. But Towson's Holiday Cahill hit a solo home run and Jessica South pulled a two-home run to left to continue the game. Allocca still ended the game in the fifth by hitting her third home run of the season. Her two-run shot was technically a walk-off as it ended the game right there with the eight-run mercy threshold being reached. Allocca extended her team-leading RBI lead to 19. McCormick, who allowed four runs (three earned) in one inning of work, fell to 5-5.

Smith's two-run home run in the third inning of the second game off Towson starter Megan Dejter (3-6) keyed a three-run frame as Hofstra erased a 1-0 deficit.

Smith went 3-for-7 with three runs scored. All nine starters had at least one base hit in each game. Towson took the lead in the fourth when McCormick  hit a two-run home run that followed Holiday Cahill's solo home run earlier in the inning off Hofstra senior starter Morgan Lashley, who took the no-decision.

Hofstra tied the score with an unearned run in the fourth and Patierno drove in what proved to be the winning runs by pulling Dejter's offering to left with two outs. Her blast scored sophomore Michaela Transue, and Pirone capitalized on the lead by retiring the side in order in both the sixth and seventh inning.

Pietrafesa scored three runs on the day and made a fantastic catch at the wall in right field in the second game.

Hofstra will continue a nine-game homestand on Wednesday with a doubleheader against MAAC-member Iona at 3 p.m.
