SB: Long Balls Key Doubleheader Sweep Over Iona

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra smashed seven total home runs – including grand slams from Caryn Bailey in each end of a doubleheader, as Hofstra slugged its way to two non-conference victories over Iona, 15-0 and 16-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium.

Bailey posted six RBIs in the first game and 10 on the afternoon and sophomore second baseman Lacy Clark scored four runs and drove in four. Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley threw a five-inning one hitter in the first game and fellow senior Taylor Pirone followed with four shutout innings in the second game to help the Pride extend its season-high winning streak to 10 games in improving to 17-7-1 overall.

Sophomores Lacey Clark and Michaela Transue joined Bailey as three player who homered in each end of the doubleheader. Freshman Megan Patierno also went deep as the Pride out-scored the Gaels, 31-1, despite each game being shortened to five innings because of the run rule. Iona fell to 4-17.

Hofstra improved to 7-0 at home this season and has scored at least 14 runs in three of the last four games. Through the first six games of the current homestand, Hofstra has out-scored teams, 64-19, with 16 home runs. Hofstra Softball Stadium has produced power numbers worthy of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium with 27 combined home runs being hit in six games.

The Pride scored a season-high 11 runs in the second inning of the second game. Sixteen batters were sent to the plate as Clark and freshman Brittany Allocca each scored twice in the inning. Iona starter Jordan Courage (1-7) retired the first batter before the next 11 reached safely. Clark and Transue hit back-to-back home runs the first time through the order and Bailey went the other way for her second grand slam of the afternoon by knocking Courage's offering over the left-center field wall.

Pirone improved to 7-6 by holding Iona to just one base hit. She struck out seven in four innings and did not walk a batter. Sophomore reliever Jessica Peslak pitched the final inning. Lashley also allowed just one hit in the opener. The right-hander struck out nine in five innings and needed just 75 pitches in lowering her ERA to 1.66. Lashley (10-1) has won 10 consecutive decisions.

Hofstra scored multiple runs in each of the four innings the team was at-bat. Allocca's RBI single drove in Bailey and Smith in the opening inning and Bailey took Iona starter Christine Costello (1-3) deep on a screaming line drive over the left-centerfield wall to key a five-run second inning. Bailey had two home runs and two doubles for four extra-base hits on the afternoon.

Clark homered while Transue and Patierno each lined doubles in a three-run third inning and Pietrafesa's three-run triple in the fourth keyed a five-run barrage.

Hofstra will put its winning streak and 6-0 mark in CAA play on the line when the Pride hosts defending league champion James Madison (also 6-0 against the conference) in a three-game home set starting with Friday's 2 p.m. doubleheader. The series finale is scheduled for Saturday at noon.
