SB: Clark Hits Game-Winning Grand Slam In Seventh Against Towson

Hempstead, N.Y. – Sophomore Lacey Clark broke a tie with a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the seventh in the snow to lift Hofstra to a 7-3 win over Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Clark's first home run of the season cut through the snowflakes in the left-center gap off Towson starter Megan Dejter to keep the Pride undefeated in league play with a 4-0 record. Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley struck out 12 in a complete-game effort to help Hofstra win its sixth straight in improving to 13-7-1 overall. Towson fell to 10-12 and 0-4.

Freshmen Brittany Allocca and Brielle Pietrafesa drove in Hofstra's first three runs. Towson scored once in the top of the seventh to tie the score before Clark hit Hofstra's second grand slam of the season.

Junior outfielder Caryn Bailey worked a leadoff walk against Dejter (3-5) to start the seventh. A sacrifice bunt put her in scoring position before Towson centerfielder Kendly Scott misplayed senior Erin Trippi's fly ball. Scott closed her glove before securing the fly out for an error, putting runners on the corners. A walk loaded the bases for Clark, who drove the pitch out for Hofstra's first grand slam since sophomore Michaela Transue hit one on Feb. 21 against Iowa.

Lashley fell one strikeout shy of her Hofstra high of 13 set versus UNCW last season. The Pride supported her by striking for runs in the second. Transue and freshman Megan Patierno reached base with one out before Pietrafesa drove in two with a single.

Towson finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth on Holiday Cahill's two-run home run to left-center. Hofstra  again took the lead in the fifth when Allocca notched her team-leading 16th RBI drove in junior Kim Smith.

That was the difference  until Tateum Valentine led off the seventh with a home run to left. All three long balls in the game went out to the similar spot of the windswept field, as Valentine's first home run of the season tied the score at three.

Lashley recovered to retire the next three batters, including back-to-back strikeouts to give her a season high. Lashley recorded her second double-digit strikeout game of the season and first since she fanned 10 against Coastal Carolina on March 7. The right-hander tossed 120 pitches in facing 28 batters. She has won nine straight decisions.

Weather postponed the second game of what was scheduled to be a Saturday doubleheader. Hofstra and Towson will now play a twin-bill on Sunday starting at noon.
