BB: Matteson, Foster Lead Pride To 1-0 Win Over Villanova

Plymouth Meeting, PA - Bowie Matteson went seven innings in his first career start, allowing six hits with five strikeouts, and Steven Foster drove in the game's lone run as the Pride defeated Villanova, 1-0, Saturday at the Villanova Ballpark.

Hofstra improved to 8-12 on the season with the win, its third in the last four games. Villanova fell to 8-13 with the loss.

Hofstra scored the only run of the game in the third inning as Brett Johnson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Hardardt. Leadoff batter Steven Foster then singled up the middle to send Ryan Donovan, who pinch ran for Johnson, home.

The Wildcats managed just three more baserunners off of Matteson (1-0), who left after throwing 96 pitches in his seven innings.  The junior, a transfer from Boston University, had made six relief appearances with two saves prior to getting the start today. Matt Weissheier allowed a base hit in the eighth before Chris Weiss came on in the ninth to nail down his second save. The freshman allowed a two-out double to B.J. Bochicchio and a walk to pinch-hitter Brian Trabulsi before getting Emmanuel Morris to foul out to third for the final out.

Hunter Schryver (0-2) was the hard luck loser for Villanova after allowing one run on two hits over eight innings. He walked four and struck out eight before yielding to Max Almonte, who pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Brad Witkowski had the only other Hofstra hit, a leadoff single in the seventh.

Hofstra and Villanova conclude the three-game series, which is tied at one game apiece, Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
