BB: Hofstra Picks Up Big Road Win At St. John's

Queens, NY - Hofstra starter Alec Eisenberg went five strong innings and Brad Witkowski drove in three runs as Hofstra defeated St. John's, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

Hofstra erupted for four runs off reigning Big East Pitcher of the Week Alex Katz in the second inning. David Leiderman started it off with a single up the middle. Eric Ferguson reached on an error after putting down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on first and second. Witkowski then came through with an RBI single that plated Leiderman. Chris Weiss had an RBI single to score Ferguson and send Witkowski to third. Chris Hardardt then put down a sacrifice bunt to score Witkowski and send Weiss to second. Dalton Rouleau drove in the final run with a single to right.

The Red Storm picked up a run in the bottom of the second as Tyler Sanchez reached on a two-out single that scored Matt Harris, who had walked. But Hofstra responded with a two-run third, taking advantage of Katz' wildness. He walked Steven Foster to lead off the inning and then issued a one-out walk to Leiderman, which ended his afternoon. Chris Kalica came on in relief and struck out his first batter, but Witkowski came through with a double to knock in both runs and extend the lead to 6-1.

St. John's got a run back in the bottom of the fifth without the benefit of a hit as Zach Lauricella led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a fly out and scored on a ground out to short by Michael Donadio. Robert Wayman drove in the final St. John's run in the sixth with a single, but reliever Nick Kozlowski escaped a bases-loaded jam by getting a fly out and a strikeout to end the threat.

Eisenberg (2-1) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings. Kozlowski earned his first career save by throwing the final four innings, allowing one run on six hits.

Witkowski, Weiss and Hardardt, the 7-8-9 hitters in the Pride lineup, led Hofstra with two hits apiece. Leiderman scored twice for the Pride as well.

Katz (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings. Kalica, Joey Graziano and Shawn Heide allowed just four hits the rest of the way for the Red Storm.

Hofstra returns to action this weekend in a three-game series at Villanova. First pitch Friday is set for 3:15 p.m.
