BB: Seventh Inning Rally Lifts Hofstra Past Manhattan

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra used a three-run seventh inning, capped off by a two-run single from Ryan Donovan, to defeat Manhattan, 4-2, Tuesday afternoon at University Field. The game was Hofstra's true home opener after playing four games at Mitchel Athletic Field due to snow on the Pride's on-campus field.

The Pride improved to 6-11 with the win, while Manhattan slipped to 5-14.

The Pride managed just four hits in the game, but took advantage of four defensive miscues by the Jaspers to score three unearned runs. Manhattan collected eight hits on the day, but only one after the sixth inning as a trio of Hofstra relievers kept the Jaspers in check down the stretch.

Manhattan scored both of its runs in the third, capitalizing on a Hofstra error in the process. Joe McClennan led off the inning with a double, the first of two on the day for the Jaspers second baseman. Matt Forlow attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Hofstra pitcher Brian MacDonald's throw to first was high and wide which allowed McClennan to score and Forlow to advance to third. After a ground out and a hit batsman, Christian Santisteban delivered a run scoring single to make it a 2-0 game.

The Pride scratched a run across in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Chris Hardardt lined a shot off the thigh of Manhattan starter Tom Cosgrove, who chased the ball down and threw wildly to third for a two-base error that moved Hardardt to third. After a walk to Dalton Rouleau put runners on the corners, Hardardt was able to score on a throwing error by Cosgrove on a pickoff attempt at first.

The infield single by Hardardt was the only hit that Cosgrove would allow and he left after six innings, recording six strikeouts. He was relieved by Steve Arntsen to start the seventh. A one-out walk and an error put runners on first and second before Brad Witkowski drove in the tying run with a double to the wall in left field. That brought on Casey Meyers to pitch and he retired his first batter before Donovan blooped a shot that fell between the mound and second base. Leiderman scored easily and Witkowski never slowed around third as he headed home. Meyers attempted the out at the plate, but the throw was wild and allowed Donovan to get to second.

Brendan Mulligan (1-0), who allowed one hit in the top of the seventh, picked up the win. Matt Weissheier threw a perfect eighth inning and Chris Weiss followed with a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save. MacDonald pitched well in the no decision, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Arntsen (0-2) took the loss for the Jaspers, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit in 1/3 of an inning.

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday afternoon at St. John's. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
