SB: Hofstra Shuts Out UNCW Twice To Start CAA Play

Wilmington, N.C. – Hofstra raced out to two fast starts to support complete-game shutout efforts from senior pitchers Morgan Lashley and Taylor Pirone as the Pride opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a doubleheader sweep, 8-0 and 3-0, on Saturday afternoon from Boseman Field.

The Pride out-hit UNCW, 19-7, to improve to 10-7-1 overall and 2-0 in CAA play. The Seahawks fell to 11-10 and 0-2 in CAA play. Hofstra has won three in a row.

The Pride scored four first-inning runs in the opener to support Lashley's second consecutive shutout. The right-hander allowed just five hits in six innings (the number of innings played due to the run rule) and struck out seven against just one walk in moving to 6-1.

A patient approach at the plate helped tag UNCW starter Casey Rowland with four first innings runs despite not getting a single hit. Rowland retired the first batter before Hofstra worked six consecutive walks. Junior outfielder Caryn Bailey, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the contest, started the carousel with a full-count walk before fellow junior Kim Smith followed suit. Freshman Brittany Allocca walked to load the bases and Rowland's wild pitch brought in the first run.

Another walk re-loaded the bases for senior Erin Trippi, who recorded the RBI with a five-pitch walk. Sophomore Michaela Transue worked another full-count walk to score Allocca. Freshman Megan Patierno's sacrifice fly capped the scoring, as Hofstra sent all nine starters to the plate despite not recording a single base hit.

Rowland, who walked six in her only inning of work, fell to 4-5, was replaced by Peyton Jordan to start the second. Jordan provided five innings out of the bullpen and threw three straight scoreless innings before Hofstra added to the lead in the fifth. Junior Chloe Fitzgerald singled and stole second and Bailey posted an infield single. Allocca drove in Fitzgerald on a bunt and Clark's RBI single to center drove in Bailey.

Hofstra went ahead by eight in the sixth to set up the run rule when Bailey launched a two-run shot for her second home run of the season. Lashley struck out the first two batters in the sixth and induced a Nella Chamblee fly out to end the game.

Pirone notched her first shutout in seventh starts this season with a two-hitter. Pirone struck out six and did not walk a batter to improve to 4-6. Allocca supported the righty  by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Pride scored all three of the team's runs in the first off Sarah Davis (4-4), who allowed 11 hits but did not give up another run in the last six innings.

Fitzgerald tallied two multi-hit games on the afternoon, going a combined 4-for-7. She used her speed with a leadoff single and Bailey (5-for-8) singled to left. A sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position and Allocca doubled to right for a two-run extra-base hit. Transue's one-out RBI single up the middle plated the third run, which was more than Pirone needed.

Pirone retired the first 12 batters before Claudia Spinelli broke up the perfect game bid with a fifth-inning leadoff single. Her hit marked UNCW's only mini rally of the game, as a hit batter and Chamblee's single loaded the bases with none out.

But Pirone settled down and got a much-needed strikeout and a force out at home kept the Seahawks scoreless. Pinch hitter Lauren Moore came to the plate as the potential go-ahead run before Pirone induced a ground out to end the threat.

Hofstra will go for the three-game sweep at UNCW on Sunday at noon.
