SB: Hofstra Blanks UNCW For CAA Series Sweep

Wilmington, N.C. – Hofstra continued to benefit from shutdown pitching and once again struck for early runs as the Pride completed a three-game sweep over UNCW with a 6-0 victory on Sunday at Boseman Field in the first Colonial Athletic Association series of the season.

Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley threw her third straight shutout and second in as many days in tossing a three-hitter. Hofstra posted its fourth straight shutout overall to improve to 11-7-1 and 3-0 in CAA play. UNCW fell to 11-11 and 0-3.

Hofstra blanked four straight opponents for the first time this season and first time since April 24- May 3, 2014 when the Pride shut out LIU Brooklyn before holding Drexel without a run in three games. That Drexel series was the last time Hofstra shut out a foe in a CAA series before holding UNCW to just 10 combined hits in the 2015 CAA-opening series.  The Pride out-scored the Seahawks, 17-0.

Junior third baseman Kim Smith hit a home run as part of a two-RBI effort and junior Caryn Bailey and Michaela Transue each drove in two runs to support Lashley, who improved to 7-1 by striking out eight and walking just one.

Lashley capped a five-day stretch in which she went 3-0 in defeating Dartmouth and UNCW twice. The Davidson, North Carolina native logged 20 innings and struck out 22, including at least seven in each start. She allowed just 14 hits and three walks to lower her season ERA to 1.29.

Smith hit a two-out solo home run to left, pulling UNCW's Casey Rowland's offering for her first home run and RBI of the season. Smith then gave Hofstra a cushion in the fifth with a run-scoring single through the left side that scored junior Chloe Fitzgerald.

Bailey's two-run single to center in the sixth provided the insurance runs off reliever Sarah Davis and Transue's two-run double in the top of the seventh provided the final margin. Rowland pitched 4 1/3 innings in allowing five hits with four walks against two strikeouts. Rowland dropped to 4-6.

Bailey finished the series 6-for-10 with four RBIs in the sweep. The Pride will return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference home game versus Northwestern.
