SB: Hofstra Wins 1-0 Pitchers’ Duel Over Dartmouth

Bronx, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley threw a complete-game six-hit shutout and senior catcher Erin Trippi drove in the game's only run in the fourth to lift Hofstra to a 1-0 win over Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on Fordham's campus.

Lashley struck out seven and walked just one to improve Hofstra's record to 8-7-1. Juniors Chloe Fitzgerald and Kim Smith each went 2-for-3. Dartmouth fell to 4-11.

The game was scheduled as Hofstra's home opener, but was moved to Fordham due to field conditions. The second game of a scheduled doubleheader was called off due to frigid conditions.

Lashley and Dartmouth lefthander Kristen Rumley each threw complete games in the wind-swept; low-scoring matchup. Rumley (3-8) took the hard luck loss after striking out six in six innings. Only Trippi's RBI single prevented the southpaw from matching zeros against Lashley, who improved to 5-1 with her third shutout of the season.

Fitzgerald started the fourth-inning rally with a leadoff infield single on an 0-2 pitch. Rumley induced two more outs, including a force out that put freshman Brittany Allocca on first, before Smith singled down the left field line. Redshirt freshman Rachel Simodejka pinch ran for Allocca and sophomore Lacey Clark walked to load the bases.

Trippi then drove in the game-winning run by working the count to 2-0 and pulling a single to the left side that plated Simodejka.

Lashley made the lead stand up and escaped any potential issues as Dartmouth left six runners on base. The right-hander pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, including the game-ending strikeout of pinch-hitter Claire Bird to close it out.

Rumley went 2-for-3 and was the only Dartmouth batter to log multiple hits in the game in addition to her complete-game effort.

Hofstra will begin Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend at UNCW. The Pride will face the Seahawks in a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon before squaring off again in the finale on Sunday at 12 p.m.
