MLAX: Fourth Quarter Spurt Lifts Hofstra Past St. John's

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra scored four consecutive fourth quarter goals to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 9-6 lead en route to a 10-7 win over St. John's Tuesday night at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra improved to 3-4 on the season with its second consecutive win, while the Red Storm slipped to 2-6. The victory also snapped a two-game losing streak for Hofstra in the all-time series with St. John's and improved its record against the Red Storm to 13-4.

Sam Llinares and Brier Davis each recorded hat tricks for the Pride, while Mike Malave had two goals. Dylan Alderman had a goal and three assists. Llinares added two assists as well.

The first half saw the teams battle to a 3-3 tie. Hofstra opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from Korey Hendrickson 3:50 into the contest. Eric DeJohn tied it up for St. John's eight seconds later off a feed from Nick Heller. Nearly seven minutes later, Alderman fed Malave, who beat St. John's keeper Harry Burke for his 18th goal of the season. But the Red Storm would tie it up just before the end of the quarter as Stefan Diachenko converted a pass from Mark DiFrangia with 54 seconds left.
St. John's would take its first lead of the game midway through the second quarter as Jason DeBenedictis scored from Nick Sherry with 7:07 remaining in the quarter. The lead held until the final minute when Alderman scored his fifth of the season with 34 seconds to go.

The Red Storm scored three of the five goals in the third quarter to take a 6-5 lead after 45 minutes. Davis scored for the Pride to give Hofstra a 4-3 lead 7:13 into the quarter. Sherry tied it for the Red Storm 1:30 later to knot the game once again. But Llinares put the Pride back up, 5-4, with his first of the game and 20th of the season with 5:07 to go. However, St. John's got goals from Diachenko and DeJohn to take the lead going into the final quarter.

The Pride offense erupted in the final stanza, scoring four goals in the first 4:49. Davis opened the scoring off a feed from Alderman 54 seconds in. Just over a minute later, Steve Romano found Llinares to the left of the cage and the junior ripped a shot past Burke for his second of the game to put Hofstra up to stay, 7-6. Llinares completed the hat trick with 10:49 to play, scoring an unassisted tally. Llinares assisted on Hofstra's next goal, feeding Malave for his 19th of the season.

Diachenko scored from DeJohn to pull the Red Storm within two, 9-7, with 4:31 to play. But the Pride did not allow another score and Davis provided one final goal for the Pride with 1:08 to play off a pass from Llinares.

Burke posted eight saves in goal for the Red Storm, while Hofstra keeper Chris Selva stopped seven shots.

Diachenko led St. John's with three goals. DeJohn had two goals and one assist. DeBenedictis and Sherry each tallied one goal and one assist.
