MLAX: Hofstra Falls To Massachusetts In CAA Opener

Hempstead, NY - Sam Llinares scored two goals and added two assists for Hofstra, but Massachusetts got three goals from Brendan Hegarty and 13 saves from goalkeeper Zach Oliveri in a 9-7 Colonial Athletic Association win over the Pride at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra saw its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 3-5, 0-1 in the CAA. Massachusetts improved to 3-5 on the season and 1-0 in the CAA with its third consecutive win.

Hofstra struck first as Mike Malave scored off a pass from Dylan Alderman 1:31 into the contest. But the Minutemen responded with five straight goals, spanning the first and second quarters, to take a 5-1 lead with 9:04 left in the opening half. Hegarty tied the score at the 3:09 mark off a feed from Gianni Bianchin. Bianchin put Massachusetts up47 seconds later with an extra-man tally from Nick Mariano. Mariano then closed out the first quarter scoring with Brendan Schroeder notching the assist with 6:55 to play.

Bianchin put the Minutemen up, 4-1, 5:56 into the second quarter from Andrew Sokol. Mariano capped the run with an unassisted goal with 6:31 to play. Llinares ended Hofstra's drought with an unassisted tally with 3:38 to play. Following an illegal procedure penalty on the ensuing face-off, Llinares struck again with a man-up goal 19 seconds later to make it a 5-3 game. That would close the first half scoring. Hofstra took 21 shots in the half, but Oliveri made seven saves. The Minutemen had 13 shots in the opening 30 minutes with Hofstra keeper Chris Selva posting just one save in the half.

Massachusetts went back up by three, 6-3, 3:20 into the second half as Dan Muller scored from Sokol. Zachary Franco scored his first career goal for the Pride off a feed from Llinares with 8:17 to play in the third to get Hofstra back to within two, 6-4, and then Brendan Kavanagh scored a man-up goal from Korey Hendrickson with 6:56 to go to make it a one-goal game. But Massachusetts got goals from Sokol and Hegarty over the next 1:53 to go back up by three, 8-5.

Hegarty would complete his hat trick 5:11 into the fourth quarter as he cut towards the goal and took a pass from Muller and put it just inside the far post to give Massachusetts a 9-5 lead. Malave cut the deficit to three, 9-6, as he converted a Brier Davis pass with 7:39 to play. Davis made it 9-7 with 5:39 to play as he bounced a shot past Oliveri on an extra-man opportunity with Llinares collecting the assist. But that would close out the scoring as neither team would score in the final 5:39.

Malave also had two goals for the Pride, while Davis had a goal and an assist. Selva finished with four saves. Malave and Finn Sullivan each led the Pride with three ground balls.

Mariano and Bianchin each had two goals and an assist for the Minutemen. Oliveri had five ground balls to lead the team, while Kyle Karaska and Austin Spencer picked up three ground balls apiece.

The Pride held a 41-24 advantage in shots and picked up 26 ground balls to Massachusetts' 21.
