WLAX: Upset Bid Falls Short for Hofstra In Loss To No. 20 Johns Hopkins

Hempstead, NY – Despite an outstanding game from senior defender April Iannetta, the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 13-9 decision to No. 20 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Iannetta had game-highs of six ground balls, five caused turnovers and four draw controls to lead the Pride. Offensively, senior attacker Brittain Altomare posted two goals and two assists, while tying Iannetta for game-high honors with four draw controls. The six ground balls for Iannetta tied a career-high.

The loss drops the Pride's record to 4-3 this season, with two of the losses to ranked teams. The Blue Jays improved to 4-2 with the victory.

Dene' DiMartino had four points on three goals and one assist to lead Johns Hopkins, while Emily Kenul and CeCe Finney each added two goals and an assist.

Johns Hopkins got on the board first with a pair of goals over the first seven minutes of the contest to take an early lead. Freshman midfielder Amanda Seekamp would get the Pride on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally at the 21:15 mark before a goal from Emily Kenul of JHU pushed the lead back to two, 3-1, with 18:59 to play before intermission.

The Blue Jays would still hold a two-goal advantage, 4-2, before Hofstra scored the final two goals of the half to knot the score at four at the break. Senior attacker Sam Lenox made it 4-3 at the 10:30 mark before junior defender Lindsey Alfano scored a free-position goal with 6:56 remaining in the opening stanza to tie the score.

Johns Hopkins opened the scoring in the second stanza with two quick goals to push the lead to 6-4 following a DiMartino unassisted tally at the 27:46 mark.

The upset-minded Pride would roar back, though, and Hofstra scored three straight goals to hold a 7-6 advantage at the 19:19 mark. Sophomore attacker Tiana Parrella started the run with freshman midfielder Carlee Ancona adding a free-position goal and then junior midfielder Becky Conto scoring off an assist from Altomare to complete the three-goal spurt.

The lead would be short-lived, though, as the Blue Jays answered with a 4-0 run of their own to open up a 10-7 lead with 15:30 remaining after an unassisted goal from Kristen Cannon.

Altomare would cut the deficit to two, 10-8, with a goal at the 5:57 mark, but that would be as close as the Pride would get with Johns Hopkins holding on for the four-goal victory.

Parrella finished with a goal and an assist for the Pride, which also got three caused turnovers from junior defender Shelby Milne

KC Emerson made 10 saves and had three ground balls for Johns Hopkins.

Hofstra returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when it travels to Rutgers for a 5 p.m. contest.
