MLAX: Clarke and Llinares Lead Hofstra Over Providence

Hempstead, NY – Pride junior Sam Llinares equaled his career-high with eight points on four goals and four assists and sophomore Kris Clarke won 19 of 22 face-offs to lead Hofstra to a 15-4 non-conference victory over the Friars of Providence College at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for Hofstra, which improved to 2-4 on the season. Providence, which saw their two-game winning streak stopped, is now 4-3 in 2015.

Llinares tied his eight-point performance, set against Manhattan on February 24, with his four goals and four assists which brought his season numbers to 19 goals and 16 assists in six games. Clarke, who also picked up eight ground balls in the contest, equaled his career-high with 19 face-off wins, previously set against Marist in 2014. In that game, Clarke won 19 of 27 face-offs. But the .863 winning percentage is a single-game best for the second-year player from Garden City, NY.

Senior Mike Malave added two goals and one assist while sophomore Brier Davis and junior Korey Hendrickson each added two goals for Hofstra. Freshman Dylan Alderman recorded one goal and two assists and senior goalie Chris Selva made eight saves to post his second win of the year for the Pride.

Four different players scored goals for the Friars of Providence. Senior goalie Peter Badgley recorded 14 saves in the PC cage. Providence was outshot, 46-15 and picked up 16 ground balls to Hofstra's 34 in the contest.

The Friars scored the first goal of the contest just 3:51 into the first quarter as Joshua Keller notched his sixth of the season on a charge from the side. But Davis scored a man-up goal, on a pass to the crease from Malave, with 5:51 to play and freshman Brendan Kavanagh scored his second of the year to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead with 3:39 to play in the first. The Friars tied the contest with eight seconds to play in the quarter as Keenan Assaraf notched his second of the year.

Hofstra had a big second quarter with four unanswered goals to open a 6-2 lead at halftime. Hendrickson started the run with his sixth of the season, off a rebound, 52 seconds into the period. Llinares tallied back-to-back goals 1:03 apart, and Alderman notched his fourth of the year with 5:18 to play in the half to end the scoring in the first 30 minutes.

Providence's Buck McClure scored 1:41 into the third quarter to bring the Friars within three at 6-3.

But the Pride scored eight unanswered goals in an 8:39 span to blow the game open. Hendrickson notched his second of the day at the 12:00 mark. Malave notched his 16th of the year 42 seconds later and Davis got his second of the day off the face-off with senior Ryan Rielly assisting on the play. Llinares completed his third hat-trick of the year 1:01 later before Malave got his second of the game at the 8:09 mark. Senior Tyler Begley would pick up his second of the year with 7:06 to play in the period. Llinares and red-shirt freshman Tim Nowak would score 54 seconds apart, with the latter tally coming on the man-up, for a 14-3 lead with 3:21 to play in the third.

Will Mazzone for PC and freshman Mitch Kingsley for Hofstra would exchange goals in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring in the contest. It was Kingsley's first collegiate goal.

Hofstra has now outscored their opponents, 33-4 in the last two home games with home tilts against St. John's and Massachusetts coming up in the next week.

The Pride will host the Red Storm of St. John's on Tuesday, March 17 at Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
