BB: Hofstra Opens CAA Play With Split Against William & Mary

Uniondale, NY - Nick Kozlowski and Bowie Matteson combined to limit William & Mary to five hits in a 6-4 game one win as Hofstra split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Friday afternoon at Mitchel Athletic Field. William & Mary took game two, 11-1.

Hofstra, which was playing for the first time in 19 days due to weather-related cancellations, is now 3-7 on the season and 1-1 in the CAA. William & Mary is 9-5, 1-1 in league play.

The Tribe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Kozlowski walked the bases loaded. Josh Smith delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to plate one run before Cullen Large drove in the second with a single.

But Hofstra fought back in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs all with two outs. After Tribe starter Jason Inghram recorded the first two outs, Brad Witkowski reached on an error. Brian MacDonald followed with an infield hit and Chris Weiss drove home Witkowski with a single. Eric Ferguson followed with an RBI single of his own to tie the game and after Dalton Rouleau walked to load the bases, Steven Foster drew a walk to force in the go ahead run.

The Pride tacked on a run in the fourth as Ferguson tripled to left with two outs and then scored on a wild pitch. After William & Mary scored in the top of the fifth on a Willie Shaw RBI groundout, the Pride got the run back as Brett Johnson homered to lead off the bottom of the frame. The home run was his first of the season, as well as the Pride's first round-tripper of the year.

Rouleau completed the Hofstra scoring with an RBI single in the sixth, while Smith had an RBI double for the Tribe in the seventh.

Kozlowski (1-2) allowed three hits and three runs over six innings to earn the win. He walked five and struck out five. Matteson earned his first save of the season with three innings of two-hit relief with five strikeouts.

Inghram (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out six. Chris Lohr pitched two innings of one-hit relief.

In game two, Nick Brown (3-0) allowed two hits over six innings and Michael Toner allowed three hits in three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save in an 11-1 victory. Large had four hits and three RBIs, while Smith added two hits and three RBIs.

The Tribe led 9-0 after the top of the fourth before the Pride got on the board following Witkowski's RBI double. But that was the only offense the Pride would muster in the loss. Witkowski had two of the Pride's five hits.

Chris Bonk (1-2) took the loss after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings. Six Hofstra relievers limited the Tribe to just four hits and two runs the rest of the way.

The teams are scheduled to conclude the series Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
