WBB: Late Run Lifts Hofstra Past William & Mary

Hempstead, NY - Anjie White posted her third double-double of the season with a career-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds and Hofstra used a late second half run to pull away from William & Mary, 52-46, Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The Pride scored nine of the last 11 points to seal the win. Hofstra improves to 14-9 overall and 7-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association, and snaps a two-game losing streak. William & Mary sees its four-game win streak snapped and falls to 11-12 on the year, 5-7 in the CAA.

The teams played a close first half, which was to be expected after the teams played a one-point game (57-56 W&M win) in the first meeting on January 25. The Pride held a 24-22 lead after the opening 20 minutes in which neither team held a greater than six-point advantage. The Pride used strong post play from White, who scored 12 points in the stanza on 6-10 shooting. After the Tribe took their largest lead of the half at 16-12, the Pride stormed back to grab the lead. Krystal Luciano started a 10-run with a steal and layup as the Pride took a 22-16 advantage. Kelly Loftus, who was coming off a career-best 30 point game Friday night, tallied seven points in the run. William & Mary would score six of the final eight points of the half to cut the deficit to two at intermission.

William & Mary would score six of the first nine points of the second half to take a 28-27 lead on Abby Rendle's jumper with 17:45 to go. The Pride would tie the score on Loftus' free throw and then take a four-point lead, 32-28, following back-to-back baskets from Jakelle King-Gilchrist and Elo Edeferioka.

A 6-0 spurt by the Tribe gave them a 34-32 lead with 9:50 to go on Alexandra Masaquel's basket. The Pride would score two baskets over the next two minutes to take a 36-34 lead, but William & Mary would tie the score at 36 with 6:37 to go.

The Tribe would take a one-point lead, 44-43, with 2:56 to play before the Pride scored four consecutive points to go ahead, 47-44, with 2:04 to play. Dee Thomas-Palmer put Hofstra up by one with her first points of the game and White then delivered a jumper in the paint for a three-point edge. The run would reach six as Luciano stole a pass and converted the fast break layup to put the Pride up 49-44 with 51 seconds to play. Loftus's two free throws pushed the run to eight and the lead to seven, 51-44. The Tribe cut the deficit to five, 51-46, on Latrice Hunter's basket, but Loftus hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds to go and neither team would score again.

The 17 points for White was her second career-high in a week as she posted 16 points versus Delaware on February 1. The red-shirt sophomore shot 8-13 from the floor and added three blocks in a career-best 34 minutes. She was joined in double-figures by Loftus with 13 points and Luciano with 11. Luciano also had four steals in the game. Edeferioka tallied 12 rebounds in the game to lead the Pride.

Masaquel paced the Tribe with 14 points while Rendle chipped in with 10 points and four blocks. Jazmen Boone pulled down 12 rebounds to share game-high honors with Edeferioka.

Hofstra is back in action this Friday, February 13, at College of Charleston. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
