WBB: Durant’s Double-Double Pushes Pride Past Charleston

Charleston, S.C. –  Freshman forward Ashunae Durant posted a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 11 rebounds to propel Hofstra to a 69-57 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the College of Charleston at TD Arena on Friday afternoon.

Redshirt sophomore forward Anjie White notched 16 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Kelly Loftus scored 11 of her 13 total points in the first half. Hofstra won its second straight game to improve to 15-9 and 8-5 in league play. CofC lost for the sixth consecutive game in dropping to 4-19 and 2-10.

Junior guard Darius Faulk tallied nine points and four assists. Freshman guard Alena Leon scored five points off the bench, falling just short of her season-high of seven set vs. CCSU on Nov. 14.

Hofstra utilized a 14-0 second-half run to turn a tied score into a comfortable edge at 58-44. CofC would not get closer than six following an Erin Hall three-pointer and Breanna Bolden hit two free throws to make it 63-57.

Bolden (14 points), Hall (13) and Jackie Luna-Castro (13) all finished in double figures for the Cougars. Charleston is still looking for its first win since Jan. 18.

Hofstra erased a pair of small second-half deficits, which was as much as three when CofC made four straight shots to go ahead 41-38. With the score knotted at 44, Hofstra swung momentum irrevocably with a 14-0 run over a 4:50 stretch to put the game away.

The Pride's overall run during that span was 18-2 with the Pride allowing just two free throws in a 8:59 stretch and forcing CofC to miss 12 consecutive field goal attempts.

Durant scored eight points in the second half o 4-of-5 shooting with six rebounds. She recorded her seventh double-double of the season and the first of her career as a reserve. Durant, who missed the previous two games due to an injury, played 21 minutes and shot 5-of-7 overall.

White's point total was one shy of her career high set in the previous game against William & Mary. White has 33 combined points in the last two games.
CofC made four straight shots for a 41-38 lead. White helped Hofstra erase its last deficit of the game, though the Cougars tied the score at 44 on a free throw with 13:09 left.

A White free throw and Faulk's jumper near the midway mark of the period put Hofstra ahead for good. Faulk continued to push the pace and fired a hard pass to White on the low right block for another layup.

White's three-point play gave Hofstra a 54-44 lead, helping Hofstra sweep the regular season series. The Pride led the game for a 33:33 stretch.

Hofstra went up by double digits in the opening half, though CofC eventually erased an 11-point deficit that was forged as Loftus drilled a trio of three-pointers in the opening four minutes.

Loftus connected from both the left and right wings to and sophomore forward Anjie White hit a jumper to stake Hofstra to a 15-4 lead as part of a 12-0 run.

CofC forced five turnovers in a four-minute span and went on a 6-0 run to climb within 17-15. The Cougars ended the half on a 7-0 run, but the Pride still carried a 31-30 edge into the locker room thanks to Loftus' 11 points. Durant and Leon contributed a combined 12 points off the bench before the break.

Hofstra improved to 15-0 when leading at halftime this season.

Hofstra will cap its two-game Carolina road swing with a Sunday matchup at Elon at 1 p.m. The Pride and Phoenix will oppose each other for the first time as conference foes.
