BB: Hofstra Drops A Pair Of Games To Close Road Trip

Honolulu, HI - Hofstra's season-opening eight game road trip came to an end today with a doubleheader loss to Hawaii. Hofstra dropped the opener, 8-2, and then lost in the night cap, 9-3.

The Pride fell to 2-6 with the losses, while Hawaii improved to 4-5 with the wins.

In the opener, LJ Brewster went the distance for the Rainbow Warrior and allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts as Hawaii took the 8-2 win. Kaeo Aliviado had two hits, including a two-run home run, and three RBIs.  Hawaii jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, chasing Pride starter Adam Heidenfelder (0-2) after 1-plus innings. The freshman allowed five runs on three hits and five walks.

Brewster (2-0) kept the Pride off the board until the seventh inning when the Pride loaded the bases and Eric Ferguson came through with a two-out, two-run single.  Ferguson, David Leiderman and Mat Annunziata each had two hits for the Pride in the game.

Hofstra opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Dalton Rouleau led off with a double and went to third on a single from Ferguson. Brad Witkowski followed with a sacrifice fly and two batters later, Leiderman came through with an RBI single.

But Hawaii surged ahead with a seven-run third inning. Aliviado had his second home run of the day, a three-run blast, to put the Rainbow Warriors ahead, 3-2. Alan Baldwin had a two-run single, while JJ Kitaoka and Stephen Ventimilia also had run-scoring singles. Hawaii would tack on another run in the fourth and one in the sixth, both off reliever Bowie Matteson.

The Pride loaded the bases in the sixth, but managed just one run as Jake Fallon drew a bases loaded walk to force home Annunziata.

Hofstra starter Nick Kozlowski (0-2) lasted 2 1/3 innings and was charged with all seven runs (five earned) on four hits and four walks. Leiderman, Rouleau, Ryan Donovan and Ferguson each went 2-4 in game two.

Kyle von Ruden (1-0) picked up the win for Hawaii after allowing three runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Baldwin finished game two 3-3 with two RBIs, while Aliviado had a double and home run for the Rainbow Warriors.

Hofstra is back on the road next weekend, traveling to VMI for a three-game series starting Saturday.
