SB: Late Comeback Spurs Saturday Split For Pride

Lafayette, La. – Hofstra mounted an eight-run rally with two outs in the seventh to turn a two-run deficit into a 9-3 victory over Iowa in the second day of the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational. The Pride fell to the sixth-ranked Ragin Cajuns in the second game, 9-0 in six innings, to split the afternoon at Lamson Park.

Down 3-1 with two outs in the final inning against the Hawkeyes, Hofstra registered five straight base hits and seven straight baserunners. Sophomore shortstop Micaela Transue smashed her first career grand slam to cap the rally. Hofstra's overall record is 4-5 following the defeat against Louisiana. Iowa fell to 3-8 and the Cajuns stayed undefeated at 12-0.

In the opener, senior catcher Erin Trippi went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and sophomore second baseman Lacey Clark scored twice. Staring down a possible defeat, junior first baseman Danielle Bitts worked a one-out walk in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate against Iowa starter Shayla Starkenburg, who induced a fly out to send Hofstra down to its final out.

That's when Hofstra mounted its first eight-run inning since April 19, 2014 at Delaware in which the Pride scored eight runs in the third inning. Junior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald legged out an infield single to put the tying run on base and junior centerfielder Caryn Bailey lined a RBI single to center to make it 3-2.

Sophomore second baseman Lacey Clark took Hofstra starter Morgan Lashley off the hook with a full-count single to center. After being down to its last strike, Clark's RBI knotted the score at three.

Freshman Brittany Allocca, who homered against Iowa on Friday, followed with what proved to be the game-winning RBI on a single up the middle against Starkenburg to score Bailey for a 4-3 Hofstra lead.

That brought in pitcher Ashley Yoways, who continued a Hofstra streak of timing the pitches by hitting another single up the middle that scored Clark for a two-run edge. A seven-pitch walk to junior third baseman Kim Smith loaded the bases and Transue delivered key insurance runs by going the other way for a grand slam to right-center.

The outburst made a winner of Hofstra senior Taylor Pirone, who threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Pirone held Iowa to just three hits and one run in five innings. The right-hander struck out four and did not walk a batter. Starkenburg was responsible for six runs to fall to 2-5. Iowa center fielder Sammi Gyerman went 2-for-3 and drove in two of her team's three runs.

Louisiana's Jamie Landry hit a three-run home run in the third to open the scoring and finished with four RBIs. Lexie Elkins cracked a two-run home run and Christina Hamilton allowed just two runs in five scoreless innings to keep the Cajuns unbeaten. Hamilton struck out three in improving to 2-0. Pirone fell to 2-4 in pitching give innings in the defeat.

Hofstra will cap the five-game tournament on Sunday in taking on McNeese State at 1 p.m.
