SB: Pietrafesa’s Clutch Pinch Hitting Gives Hofstra Walk-Off Win Over McNeese State

Lafayette, La. – Freshman Brittany Allocca continued her hot start  to her collegiate career with a pair of RBIs and fellow freshman Brielle Pietrafesa hit a pinch-hit game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Hofstra to a 3-2 win over McNeese State in the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational finale on Sunday afternoon at Lamson Park.

Senior pitcher Taylor Pirone tossed 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Pirone (3-4) helped Hofstra go 3-2 in the five-game tournament and upped the Pride's overall record back to .500 at 5-5. McNeese State saw its four-game winning streak snapped in falling to 9-4.

Freshman accounted for all three of Hofstra's RBIs, including Pietrafesa's first career pinch-hit base hit to score junior Kim Smith with the winning run in the walk-off victory. Smith finished 2-for-3 and joined junior Chloe Fitzgerald as Pride players with multi-hit games. Fitzgerald was also 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Senior pitcher Morgan Lashley took a no-decision in allowing just one earned run in 3 2/3 innings. Lashley struck out one and allowed just three hits in facing 18 batters.
In the second, the Cowgirls threatened to take a big lead when a walk sandwiched around two singles loaded the bases with none out. But Lashley settled down and allowed just one run on Taylor Goree's sacrifice fly. Lashley stranded two on a subsequent fielder's choice and fly out to keep deficit to one.

McNeese State extended its lead to 2-0 in the third. Emily Vincent reached on a leadoff error and a single and sacrifice bunt put Vincent on third. Lauren Langner's sac fly – McNeese State's second – scored the unearned run.

Hofstra responded in the bottom of the inning when Allocca, the first-year designated player, continued her string of run production by pullingCowgirls starters Emily Vincent's offering to left for a two-run single. Juniors Chloe Fitzgerald and Alyssa Cuzzola scored on the play, capping a rally that was started on Cuzzola's leadoff walk and Fitzgerald's single down the left field line.

Allocca's hit extended her team RBI lead to nine. She has three multi-RBI games through her first 10 collegiate games.

Pirone entered in relief with one out in the top of the fourth and ended the inning when senior catcher Erin Trippi threw out Dakota Matiko trying to steal second. Pirone's only hit allowed came off a leadoff single in the seventh. The Cowgirls moved the potential go-ahead to scoring position when Marisa Taunton stole second with two outs, though Pirone ended the threat on a ground out.

Pirone earned the win thanks to the seventh inning rally. Smith pulled a leadoff single through the left side. Junior first baseman Danielle Bitts' sacrifice bunt moved Smith into scoring position before Pietrafesa's walk-off single to left off Vincent (4-1) gave Hofstra the come-from-behind win.

Vincent entered the game 4-0 with a 0.64 ERA and two earned runs allowed 22 innings before Hofstra scored three runs against the right hander.

Hofstra will next be in action on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. The Pride will then face Oklahoma the next day in a doubleheader starting at 10 am.
