BB: Hofstra Holds Off Hawaii Rally In 6-5 Win

Honolulu, HI - Hofstra starter Chris Bonk allowed one run on three hits over six innings and the Pride withstood a ninth-inning rally in a 6-5 victory over Hawaii Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The Pride led, 6-1, entering the ninth.

Hofstra, which collected a season-high 15 hits, improved to 2-4 with the win, while Hawaii fell to 2-5 with the loss.  

Hofstra put a run across in the third as Steven Foster delivered a two-out single that drove home Jake Fallon, who had walked and stole second. In the fourth, David Leiderman led off the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to second. After Hawaii starter Quintin Torres-Costa struck out the next two batters, Chris Weiss came through with a run-scoring single for a 2-0 Pride lead.

The Hofstra offense erupted in the fourth, plating four runs on six hits and chasing Torres-Costa in the process. Foster got thing started with an infield single and then stole second. Two batters later, Brian MacDonald singled to put runners on the corners. Leiderman knocked in Foster with a single and then came around to score on a two-run triple off the bat of Mat Annunziata. That knocked out Torres-Costa, who was replaced by Juliene Jones. The senior reliever threw a wild pitch that allowed Annunziata to trot in from third for a 6-0 Hofstra lead.

The Rainbow Warriors got on the scoreboard in the sixth as Kaeo Aliviado took Bonk deep for a solo home run. After putting a runner on with a one-out walk, Bonk escaped further damage by getting an inning ending double play.

Bonk struck out three batters and walked two as he evened his record at 1-1 on the year. Foster posted a 4-4 game with a run, an RBI and a sacrifice. MacDonald, Weiss, Fallon and Annunziata each had two-hit games for the Pride, who received at least one hit from eight of their nine starters.

Patrick Bryant threw an inning of hitless relief in the seventh, while Matt Weissheier hurled the eighth and allowed one hit. Kevin Weissheier started the ninth inning and allowed four runs before yielding to Brendan Mulligan with runners on second and third and one out in the ninth in a 6-4 game. He gave up an RBI ground out, but struck out Aliviado with the tying run on third to pick up the save.

Torres-Costa (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. He did strike out seven batters.


The series concludes Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 6:05 (EST).
