Anjie White scored 15 points and added eight rebounds, and
Ashunae Durant added 13 points as Hofstra picked up a 62-48 win over Towson Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra never trailed in the game as it rolled to its fourth consecutive victory.
The Pride improved to 17-9 overall and 10-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson, which has dropped three straight contests, falls to 10-17 overall and 6-9 in league play.
The teams traded baskets to open the game, but from then on it was all Hofstra as the Pride scored seven straight points to go up by a 9-2 score with 15:45 on the clock on White's jumper. The lead would grow to 25-10 with 7:42 to go in the half as White got an offensive rebound and layup. Hofstra's largest lead was 17, 27-10, with 6:42 to play. Towson got to within 13 on two occasions, but Hofstra took a 15-point lead into the break at 34-19.
The Pride shot 52 percent from the field in the half, compared to 29 percent for the Tigers. Hofstra also held a 23-14 advantage on the glass and dominated down low with a 20-6 edge in points in the paint. White led a balanced scoring attack with nine points.
Krystal Luciano added seven points and
Elo Edeferioka chipped in with six.
The second half did not start at the same offensive pace for the Pride, but Towson scored just six points in the first five minutes to cut the deficit to nine, 34-25. A Markell Smith jumper cut the Hofstra lead to seven, 34-27, with 14:32 to play. But the Pride used a 5-2 run, with all five points scored by Durant, to go back up by 10, 39-29, with 11:40 to go. Â
The lead grew to 14, 48-34, on Durant's layup with 7:15 to play before Breonn Hughey's three-pointer cut it to 11 with 6:57 to play. Hofstra then scored five consecutive points to bump the lead up to 16, 53-37, with 5:09 to play. The lead would balloon to 23 points, 62-39, following a 7-0 run for the Pride that featured a three-pointer from
Asia Jackson with just over three minutes to play. Â
Darius Faulk had a balanced game for the Pride, scoring eight points with seven rebounds and seven assists. Hofstra's shooting cooled in the second half to 41 percent, but was at 46 percent for the game. Towson shot 48 percent in the second half and 38 percent for the game.
Dominique Johnson led the Tigers with 13 points, while LaTorri Hines-Allen had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Hofstra outscored Towson, 40-14, in the paint and held a 38-32 rebounding edge. Â The win completed the season sweep for the Pride, which also won 58-42, at Towson on January 11.
Hofstra is back in action Sunday at James Madison. Game time in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is 2 p.m.
