WBB: Hofstra Upends Nationally Ranked James Madison On Road

Harrisonburg, Va. – Redshirt sophomore forward Anjie White hit two clutch free throws with 40.5 seconds left to give Hofstra the lead and the Pride held on for a 63-62 road win over nationally ranked James Madison on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

White scored 13 points and was one of four Hofstra players to finish in double figures as Hofstra defeated the 23rd ranked Dukes and handed JMU its first conference loss of the season. Hofstra improved to 18-9 and 11-5 in CAA sports play and stayed within a half game of Drexel for second place in the CAA.

Hofstra crafted a 17-point second-half lead and survived a push that saw the Dukes tie the score with 1:15 left. The Pride bested a nationally ranked team for just the second time in team history and the first since beating No. 17 Michigan State on the road in 2006. Head Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey has coached the only two Hofstra teams to beat a ranked foe. Hofstra has played a ranked team 16 times in its history.

Sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka scored 11 points with seven rebounds and junior guard Darius Faulk flirted with a double-double by scoring seven points and adding eight rebounds and eight assists. Precious Hall scored a game-high 26 points, but JMU fell to 23-3 and 14-1. Hofstra ended JMU's 14-game winning streak and the Pride ended a seven-game losing streak against the Dukes.

Freshman forward Ashunae Durant scored 12 points and six rebounds. The Pride's win marked JMU's second loss in the last 34 meetings against league opponents (including an 18-game streak) and snapped a 21-game winning streak at the Convocation Center for the Dukes.

Sophomore guard Krystal Luciano contributed 10 points and four assists while helping Faulk handle the ball-handling responsibilities. Sophomore Kelly Loftus register eight points to nearly give the Pride five players in double figures against the two-time defending CAA champions. JMU was ranked 23rd by the Associated Press and 21st in the ESPN poll.

Hofstra led the game for 29:52, but the crowd of 3,652 got back into it when the Dukes turned a nine-point deficit into a tie game in less than seven minutes when Jazmon Gwathmey banked a shot in to not the score at 59.

White drew a foul on Toia Giggetts on the next trip down and sank both free throws. It was the second time in eight days White broke a tie in the final minute, following her game-winning basket at Elon.

Hall drew a non-shooting foul but went to the line for two as the Dukes were in the double bonus with 14 seconds left. She made the first but missed the second and Luciano grabbed the rebounds.

Durant made both free throws with just more than nine seconds and, without a timeout, JMU raced up the court. Hall missed her three-point attempt and Da'Lishia Griffin had a put-back right before the buzzer that only brought the Dukes within one.

The Pride held the Dukes to 34.2 percent shooting from the field in the opening half, which was the third-lowest for JMU this season. Hofstra capitalized by making half of its field goal attempts. Edeferioka, who had not scored in double figures in the past seven games, scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and five rebounds to lift Hofstra to a 38-32 halftime lead.

JMU missed six straight field goal attempts and made just one of 10 shots and Hofstra capitalized by taking a 30-22 lead, which was the largest of the half. Faulk initiated the offense and  posted seven points, six assists and four rebounds in playing every second of the opening half.

Hofstra will conclude the home portion of the schedule on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup versus Elon in a game that could have major implications for CAA Tournament seeding. The Pride will then wrap the regular season on Wednesday, March 4 at UNCW.
