MBB: Green's Double-Double Not Enough In Loss To Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Juan'ya Green had his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 assists, but it was not enough as Northeastern fought off several Hofstra rallies in a 79-68 win Thursday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Northeastern improves to 17-9 overall and 9-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Hofstra slips to 16-10 overall and 7-6 in the CAA.

Northeastern led at the break, 33-29, behind 12 first half points from David Walker. The Huskies went up 4-0 in the early going, but the Pride rallied to take a 13-12 lead on a basket from Rokas Gustys with 10:06 remaining. However, the lead was short-lived as the Huskies went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-13 advantage. Quincy Ford picked up four points in the spurt. Hofstra cut the deficit to three, 20-17, on a jumper from Dion Nesmith. But Northeastern responded with an 11-3 run to go up by 11, 31-20, with 2:33 to play. Walker scored six points for the Huskies in the run. Green keyed a 9-2 half-closing run for the Pride with a jumper. Gustys stole the ball on Northeastern's next possession and Ameen Tanksley converted a three-pointer to get Hofstra within six. After a Northeastern bucket, Gustys scored the final four points including a layup at the buzzer to make it a four-point game.

Hofstra cut the deficit to two, 40-38, on a Gustys layup with 15:38 to play in the second half. But Northeastern once again went on a run to extend the lead, this time a 9-0 spurt that made it a 49-38 contest with just under 12 minutes to go.

The Pride would not go away quietly though and put together a 13-4 run that made the score 53-51 with 8:15 remaining. Green scored six points in the run, while Brian Bernardi added five points. But that was as close as the Pride would get as Northeastern used a 9-4 run, capped off by Scott Eatherton's three-pointer, to open up a seven-point lead with 6:04 to go.

Hofstra would close to four points, 62-58, on a Malik Nichols layup with 5:23 left before Northeastern ended the game on a 17-10 run to account for the final margin.
In addition to Green, Gustys tallied a season-high 13 points and a team-high five rebounds, while Nichols added 12 points.

Eatherton led all scorers with 24 points and had a game-high nine rebounds. Walker scored 20 points and had eight assists. Ford had 15 points and T.J. Williams added 11 points.

Both teams shot well with Hofstra finishing at 50 percent for the contest while the Huskies shot 56 percent for the game. Northeastern did limit the Pride on the glass, holding a 33-17 rebound advantage.

Hofstra returns to action Sunday afternoon at Drexel. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. The game will air in the New York area on SportsNet New York (SNY).
