MBB: Hofstra Dominates Drexel; Earns 81-57 Victory

Philadelphia, PA – Senior center Moussa Kone had a career-high 23 points on 10-10 shooting from the field and junior forward Malik Nichols tied a career-high with 15 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a dominating 81-57 victory over Drexel on Sunday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

The win earned Hofstra the season sweep of Drexel as the Pride won 86-58 in Hempstead back on January 21.

With the win Hofstra is now 17-10 overall and 8-6 in league play. Drexel, which saw its six-game win streak come to an end, falls to 10-15 and 8-6 in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Dragons last two losses have both been to Hofstra.

The Philadelphia natives on the Pride's roster, junior guard Juan'ya Green and junior forward Ameen Tanksley, both had quality showings in their returns to their home town. Green tallied 13 points, six assists and six rebounds, while Tanksley had nine points and four rebounds.

After a slow start by the Pride saw Hofstra trailing 5-2 just under three minutes into the contest, the visitors would regroup and a layup from Nichols would eventually even the score at seven with 16:03 showing on the clock.

Hofstra would put together a huge first half run to take a commanding lead in the opening 20 minutes as the Pride used a 20-3 run to turn a 7-3 deficit into a 23-10 advantage with 8:38 left before halftime following another Nichols basket. Nichols would key the Pride the entire first half as he led Hofstra with 15 points and six rebounds before the break.

The Pride would continue to keep the pressure on Drexel as the first half continued and would open up as much as an 18-point advantage, 41-23, with 29 seconds left in the stanza following a jumper from graduate guard Dion Nesmith

Hofstra did much of their work in the paint in the first half, outscoring the Dragons, 34-4, inside the paint.

The Pride would open the second half with a basket from Kone, followed by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jamall Robinson to push the lead past the 20-point threshold at 46-25 just 38 seconds into the second half.

Drexel would narrow the gap to 17, 53-36, with 14:18 left in the second half to conclude a 7-2 run, but a three-pointer from Green pushed the Pride advantage back to 20 just 15 seconds later.

Hofstra would continue to dominate as the second half played on and the Pride would easily defeat the Dragons by 24 points to win for the third time in the last four games.

Tavon Allen had 20 points for Drexel, while Damion Lee added 15. Allen also had five rebounds.

Hofstra returns to action on Wednesday, January 21 when it heads to Maryland to face Towson at 7 p.m.
