WBB: Hofstra Falls To UMass On Late Four-Point Play

Amherst, Mass. – Hofstra erased a 15-point deficit to take a lead into the final seconds, but Massachusetts made a four-point play with 4.4 seconds left to swing the outcome as the Pride fell, 57-56, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night from the Mullins Center.

Hofstra was up by three when UMass' Cierra Dillard hit a three-pointer while drawing contact near the top of the arc. Dillard made a free throw to complete the four-point play and Hofstra did not get off a shot on the last possession to fall to 7-2. UMass improved to 3-4.

Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant nearly notched her sixth double-double of the year by scoring 16 points and adding nine rebounds. Durant helped give Hofstra four separate leads in the fourth quarter and senior guard Asia Jackson scored all 12 of her points in the second half.

Junior center Sandra Dongmo set career highs with 12 rebounds off the bench, including seven offensive boards. Dongmo also set personal bests with four blocks and two steals in 21 minutes.

Dillard scored seven points total, though the final four swung the balance. UMass saw 29 points scored from reserves, including Alyssa Lawrence's14 points and Kymber Hill's 10.

Hofstra utilized its full-court press to erase the double-digit deficit, generating 21 turnovers. Durant looked to give Hofstra the lead for good when she followed Loftus' free throw with a steal and completed a three-point play to put Hofstra ahead, 52-51, with 1:24 left. Senior guard Darius Faulk, who finished with a six-point, five-assist, four-rebound stat line, scored off a drive to extend the lead to three. Jackson again gave Hofstra a three-point advantage with a free throw that made it 56-53 before UMass' late shot secured the outcome for the Minutewomen.

Jackson hit a pair of clutch three-pointers in the third quarter to twice bring Hofstra within three. Jackson's first three-pointer brought Hofstra within 32-27 and her second again lowered the margin to 32-29. The Minutewomen extended the lead to five entering the fourth quarter.

Hofstra trailed at halftime for just the second time in nine games. Durant moved halfway to a double-double, scoring five points and grabbing five rebounds as the Pride battled back from a 15-point deficit to close within 27-20 at the break. Loftus added six points in the opening 20 minutes, giving Hofstra more than half its point total from the tandem. Junior guard Krystal Luciano scored four of her eight total points on a single play, converting a four-point play with 7:15 left in the second quarter. All eight players who logged time in the first half scored for UMass.
