WBB: Hofstra Stymies Marist Comeback Bid In Road Victory

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Senior guard Darius Faulk scored a career-high 20 points and knocked down a three-pointer in a key fourth-quarter sequence to lift Hofstra to a 71-67 victory over Marist in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon from McCann Arena.

Junior forward Anjie White nearly posted a double-double in her first game action in nearly three weeks, adding 11 rebounds and scoring eight points. Sophomore guard Aleana Leon notched a career-high eight points off the bench to help Hofstra improve to 8-2. Marist's Sydney Coffey scored 24 points and Tori Jarosz added 20 points, but the Red Foxes fell to 3-8

Hofstra led by as much as 15 in the fourth quarter before Marist mounted a comeback to move within a single possession in the final minute. Coffey drew a shooting foul on sophomore forward Ashunae Durant with Hofstra leading, 69-66. But Coffey's foot was on the three-point line, making it a two-shot foul instead of three. Coffey made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, though senior guard Asia Jackson grabbed the rebound, drew the foul and sank both free throws for the final margin and the victory.

Jackson scored nine points total and was one of seven Hofstra players to notch at least eight points. Hofstra's bench out-scored Marist's reserves, 19-6, in making the difference.

Durant nearly posted a double-double as well, adding eight points and 11 rebounds. Guards Kelly Loftus and Krystal Luciano each scored eight. But Faulk was the star of the game, shooting 8-for-19 while compiling five assists, four rebounds and four steals in a jack-of-all-trades effort. Faulk's previous high was 18 points set at UNCW on March 4, 2015.

Hofstra improved to 7-1 in the all-time series and won at Marist for the first time since the 1981-82 campaign. The Red Foxes had won three consecutively, including the first games in MAAC play, before the Pride handed Marist its second home loss in three games.

Loftus drilled a three-pointer in front of the Hofstra bench for a 7-0 run to start the second half for a 43-32 edge that prompted Marist to call timeout just 1:28 into the third quarter as Hofstra took the game's first double-digit lead.

Marist hit a pair of three-pointers, including Maura Fitzpatrick's head-on three-pointer, to move within 43-37. Faulk, who previous had a season-high of nine points set twice, scored 13 points in three quarters to extend Hofstra's edge to 56-45 entering the last quarter.

Faulk's reverse layup near the end of the shot clock re-built the 11 point lead with almost four minutes left. Marist capitalized on a technical foul and a personal foul and scored again after getting a defensive stop to move within 66-61 with 2:30 left.

Fitzpatrick missed an open three-pointer in transition, but the Pride did not score on the next trip down. Jarosz drew a foul on a layup and her three-point play made it 66-64 with 1:14 left. But Faulk knocked down her second three-pointer of the game to set a career high and extend Hofstra's lead to 69-64.

Faulk staked Hofstra to a 36-32 halftime lead by scoring 11 points, adding three assists and compiling two rebounds at the break. It was the eighth time in 10 games this season the Pride has led after 20 minutes.

Leon scored five points in the first quarter to lift the Pride to a 20-19 lead after one period. White played in her first game since Nov. 27 in coming back from injury and grabbed four of her total rebounds in the opening quarter.

Hofstra will have a nine-day break before resuming action on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Delaware State at 3 p.m. The game is the final non-conference matchup before the Pride commences Colonial Athletic Association play on Jan. 3 versus Delaware at 2 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex.
