WBB: Hofstra Downs Saint Joseph's Behind Loftus And Durant

Hempstead, NY - Kelly Loftus scored 24 points and Ashunae Durant posted a double-double with 17 points and a season-high tying 15 rebounds as Hofstra recorded a wire-to-wire 75-62 win over Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra improved to 7-1 on the season with its third consecutive win. The 7-1 start is Hofstra's best since an identical opening during the 2010-11 campaign. Saint Joseph's fall to 2-4 on the season and saw its modest two-game win streak ended at the hands of the Pride.

The Pride held a 17-9 lead at the end of the first period behind six points from Durant and five points from Asia Jackson. Hofstra opened the game on a 6-0 run and held the Hawks without a field goal for the first 7:14. The three-pointer from Kathleen Fitzpatrick was Saint Joseph's only field goal in the period as Hofstra held the Hawks to 1-12 shooting from the field.

Hofstra extended the lead to 16, 29-13, with 4:33 remaining in the second period following a 7-0 run that started with a three-pointer from Loftus and ended with a Sandra Dongmo layup. The Hawks closed the half on a 6-2 run that featured a pair of three-pointers from Alyssa Monaghan to cut their deficit to 31-19 at the half.

In the third period, Saint Joseph's opened up with a 3-0 run to cut the Hofstra lead to nine, 31-22. But the Pride responded with a 7-2 spurt to go back up by 14, 38-24, with 7:40 to play on a free throw from Darius Faulk.  The Hawks would not get closer than 12 the rest of the period and Hofstra built an 18-point advantage, 52-34, on Loftus' three-pointer with 47 seconds remaining before settling for a 52-36 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Pride built a 20-point advantage, 58-38, early in the fourth period on a three-point play from Sydni Epps. After a basket from the Hawks, Loftus put the Pride up by 21, 61-40, with her fifth three-pointer of the game with 8:10 on the clock. Saint Joseph's did score five straight points to get within 16. But the Pride was never threatened the rest of the way as the Hawks did not get closer than 13 points.

Krystal Luciano and Jackson joined Loftus and Durant in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Epps had six rebounds to rank second on the team.

Fitzpatrick led Saint Joseph's with 21 points, while Monaghan added 16 points and three assists.
