WBB: Hofstra Caps Non-League Play With Road Victory At Delaware State

Dover, Del. – Junior guard Kelly Loftus scored a game-high 21 points and senior Jakelle King-Gilchrist scored 11 points to finish in double figures for the second time this season as Hofstra defeated Delaware State, 66-49, in the non-conference finale Wednesday afternoon from Memorial Hall.

Senior guard Darius Faulk tied a career high by recording nine rebounds and posted seven points and five assists. Fellow backcourt mate Krystal Luciano, a junior, had eight points, four assists and two rebounds.

Hofstra Head Coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey earned her 162nd career win to tie Harvey Pyser for the most in program history. Pyser went 162-131 in 10 seasons from 1977-87. Kilburn-Steveskey is also in her 10th season and is 162-132.

Hofstra capped non-league play with a 9-2 record, marking the first time Hofstra started the season with nine wins in the first 11 games since the 2011-12 squad also started 9-2. Delaware State fell to 3-9.

King-Gilchrist scored in double figures for the first time since scoring 15 in the season opener versus Navy on Nov. 13. Junior forward Anjie White registered 10 rebounds. Junior center Sandra Dongmo grabbed eight rebounds and scored four points.

The Pride led the contest wire-to-wire and limited the Hornets to 27.4 percent shooting from the field for the game (20-for-73). It was the sixth time Hofstra limited the opposition to less than 40 percent shooting this season.

The Pride improved to 2-1 in the all-time series against the Hornets. It was the first meeting between the schools since the 1994-95 season.

Hofstra forced Delaware State to miss 18 of the team's first 20 field goal attempts in building a 25-6 lead in the second quarter.

Faulk, who scored a career-high 20 points in the team's previous game at Marist, compiled seven rebounds, three points, two assists and two steals in the opening half as Hofstra took a 38-17 edge into halftime. Dongmo compiled six rebounds and four points in the period.

Loftus cracked the 15-point plateau for the fourth time this season. Since 2014-15, she has scored at least 15 points in 14 games. She has three 20-point games in the current campaign.

Senior guard Asia Jackson contributed seven points off the bench and hit a right-corner three-pointer in the first quarter's final minute, Dongmo made a layup and King-Gilchrist drew a shooting foul just before time expired to put Hofstra ahead, 24-6, after the first quarter thanks to a 9-0 run. Loftus scored eight in the opening quarter and had 12 points by halftime.

The Pride will start Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday against Delaware at 2 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex. Hofstra was picked third in the CAA preseason coaches' poll. The game will be a rematch of the 2015 CAA Championship semifinals in which the Pride won, 45-42.
