MBB: Tanksley's Double-Double Powers Hofstra Past FAU

Hempstead, NY - Senior forward Ameen Tanksley scored 20 points and added 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while senior guard Juan'ya Green added 19 points, five rebounds and four assists as Hofstra posted a wire-to-wire 68-54 victory over Florida Atlantic Tuesday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and improved to 7-4 on the season. Florida Atlantic fell to 2-10 on the year with its fifth consecutive loss.

The Pride used a 9-0 run early in the second half to turn an 11-point advantage to a 20-point one, 45-25, with 17:07 to play on a three-pointer from junior guard Brian Bernardi. The Owls would use a 7-1 run to pull within 14, 46-32, with 15:20 remaining on a three-pointer from Jackson Trapp. A three-pointer from Tanksley put the Pride back up by 17, 49-32, with 12:07 to play. Florida Atlantic did not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Hofstra led 34-23 at halftime behind 15 points from Tanksley and 10 points from Green. Hofstra closed the half on an 11-2 run to extend a 23-21 advantage to the 34-23 lead at the break. Tanksley had two three-pointers in the spurt, while Green posted an old-fashioned three-point play. Hofstra took advantage of nine first half turnovers by the Owls, turning them into 12 points. The Pride also controlled the boards in the first 20 minutes (22-15) and had eight second chance points.  

Graduate forward Denton Koon tied Tanksley for game-high honors in rebounds with 11. Bernardi scored in double-figures with 10 points.

Trapp led Florida Atlantic with 14 points, while Marquan Botley added 10. Nick Rutherford paced the Owls with seven rebounds.   

Hofstra finished with a 47-28 advantage on the glass including an 18-5 edge on the offensive end.

Hofstra will have a few days off for the Christmas holiday before returning to action Monday night, December 28 versus Sacred Heart. Game time is 7 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

NOTES:
-Hofstra improved to 6-3 all-time versus Florida Atlantic.

-The 20-point game was the fourth of the season for Tanksley and the 13th of his Hofstra career.

-Koon's 11 rebounds matched his career-high set earlier this season versus Indiana State.

-The 54 points scored by Florida Atlantic was a season-low by a Hofstra opponent.
