Ameen Tanksley led all scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds, but it was not enough as Stony Brook rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat Hofstra, 71-68, on Sunday afternoon at the Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
Junior guard
Brian Bernardi added 22 points for Hofstra, while Stony Brook was led by 22 points and nine rebounds from Jameel Warney.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 6-4 this season, while Stony Brook improved to 6-4 with the victory.
A strong defensive effort and some clutch three-point shooting would allow Hofstra to take a four-point lead into the break behind 10 first half points from Bernardi.
Stony Brook rallied from an early 13-6 deficit to take a 20-16 lead following a pair of free throws from Ahmad Walker with 7:12 left in the half.
The opening stanza would go back and forth over the final few minutes with four straight points from Tanksley giving Hofstra a 26-24 lead with less than three minutes remaining. After a three-pointer from Lucas Woodhouse make it a one-point game with under a minute left, graduate forward
Denton Koon would send the Pride into the locker room with a four-point lead as he drained a long three-pointer at the buzzer for a 31-27 Hofstra advantage.
Senior guard
Juan'ya Green's first points of the day would come on a three-pointer at the 13:31 mark that gave Hofstra a 44-39 at the time.
Following that three-pointer, the Seawolves would go on an 11-2 run to take a 50-46 lead at the 9:35 mark of the second stanza. That run culminated with a three-pointer from Carson Puriefoy and was ended with a Pride trifecta from Tanksley with nine minutes to play.
A layup from Rayshaun McGrew with just under four minutes left in regulation would push the Stony Brook lead to six, 63-57.
Bernardi would get fouled shooting a three-pointer on the Pride's next possession and he sank all three to make it 63-60 with three minutes left.
The final few minutes would see Stony Brook keep the lead but Hofstra have multiple opportunities to narrow the gap. A basket by sophomore center
Rokas Gustys and free throws from Tanksley would twice make it a two-point game, the last at 70-68, with 16 seconds left.
After the Seawolves made one of two from the charity stripe with 15 ticks left, the Pride would have one final opportunity but Koon missed a jumper and Green missed a three-pointer right before the buzzer to seal the win for Stony Brook.
Gustys led all players with 13 rebounds in the game, while also adding eight points for the Pride. Green finished with five points for Hofstra, ending his streak of double figure scoring games while a member of the Pride at 43.
Walker finished with six points, seven rebounds and eight assists for Stony Brook, which also got nine points, five rebounds and five assists from Woodhouse.
Hofstra has a short turnaround until its next game as the Pride will host Florida Atlantic on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
