WBB: Hofstra Loses First Game Of Season In Defeat To #7 Oregon State

Guaynabo, Puerto Rico – Hofstra junior guard Krystal Luciano scored nine points playing in front of her hometown fans, but Oregon State's Sydney Wiese scored a game-high 19 points and Jamie Weisner added 15 points as the Pride fell to the seventh-ranked Beavers, 73-50, in the San Juan Shootout Friday afternoon from Mario Morales Coliseum.

Junior guard Kelly Loftus contributed 14 points, but Oregon State shot a collective 57.8 percent from the field to lift the Beavers to the win in the opener of the tournament for both teams. Ruth Hamblin notched 11 points and five rebounds for the Beavers.

Hofstra lost for the first time in dropping to 4-1. The four wins to start a season was the most for a Hofstra team since 1997-98, though the Pride could not match the 1985-86 squad with a 5-0 start. Oregon State, ranked seventh in both major national polls, including the Associated Press rankings, improved to 4-0.

Hofstra junior forward Anjie White scored a right-block layup 16 seconds in but went down with an injury immediately after contact. Oregon State then went on a 12-0 run, prompting a Hofstra timeout. The Beavers would not trail the rest of the way, though Loftus's left-wing three-pointer made it 14-9.

Oregon State shot 65.2 percent from the field in the opening half to go up 41-21 at the break. The Beavers made 6-of-7 three-pointers in the half, capped by Katie McWilliams's right-corner shot. The Beavers made a layup at the buzzer to go ahead by the 20-point plateau for the second time in the half. Hofstra trailed at the half for the first time this season.

Oregon State scored the first four points in the third quarter to extend its advantage to 45-21. The Pride used a full court press and hit a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to 49-31. Weisner responded by drawing a foul on the blocks and hitting both free throws and Oregon State scored after a defensive stop for a 54-31 edge. The Beavers maintained the pace to took a 58-33 lead the fourth quarter.

Wiese shot 7-for-8 from the field and added seven rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Asia Jackson scored seven points and tallied two assists off the bench for Hofstra.

The Pride featured two players from Puerto Rico who saw family come out in support. Luciano (San Juan) and sophomore guard Aleana Leon (Ponce) both saw action. Luciano, who scored a career-high 20 points in the Pride's previous game at Fairfield Tuesday night, made a trio of three-pointers. Leon played seven minutes.

Hofstra played the first game in program history in Puerto Rico. The last time the Pride played outside the contiguous United States came in 2011 with a tournament in Cancun, Mexico.
The Pride played the first Associated Press top-10 ranked team since falling to No. 1 Connecticut in 2009.

Hofstra will conclude the San Juan Shootout on Saturday against Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. Eastern time from Morales Coliseum.
