WBB: Hofstra Cruises To Victory Over Coastal Carolina In San Juan Shootout

Guaynabo, Puerto Rico  –  Hofstra opened a 40-point halftime lead and all 11 available players scored as the Pride won, 82-40, over Coastal Carolina in the San Juan Shootout finale Saturday afternoon from Mario Morales Coliseum.

The Pride took a 53-13 edge at the break thanks to a 27-0 showing in the second quarter as the Pride scored 31 consecutive points spanning the first-to-third quarters. Junior guard Krystal Luciano again put on a show in font her hometown family and friends by scoring 12 of her game-high 16 total points in the opening quarter to help Hofstra improve to 5-1 and earn a split in the tournament. Coastal Carolina fell to 3-3 and lost both games in the matchups in Puerto Rico.

Hofstra has won five of the season's first six games for the first time since 2011-12 when the Pride won six of the first seven games. All healthy Hofstra players earned playing time, including freshman Kayla Minott, who made her NCAA debut and scored her first point of her career with a fourth-quarter free throw and totaled three points.

Junior center Sandra Dongmo scored a career-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added six rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant contributed nine points and four rebounds. Hofstra forced 27 turnovers total.

Luciano needed just one quarter to score in double figures for the third time in four games to pace a total team effort.  Senior forward Sydni Epps contributed nine points and five rebounds in her season's first start. The Pride's bench out-scored Coastal Carolina, 38-8.

The Pride held an opponent to less than 50 points for the first time since limiting Delaware to 42 points on March 14 of last season. The 31-0 run is a season high for Hofstra.

Hofstra nearly doubled Coastal Carolina's total shot output in the opening half, holding the Chanticleers to just 4-for-18 shooting from the field. The Pride did not allow a single point in the second quarter and forced 20 turnovers in the opening half, scoring 21 points off the miscues.

Senior guard Darius Faulk coast-to-coast steal and three-point play 29-13 edge and Dongmo's right-block layup put Hofstra ahead by 18.The Pride would build momentum from there, with sophomore guard Aleana Leon's drive to the basket  for a three-point play one of Hofstra's many highlights. Leon, from Ponce, Puerto Rico, added seven points and three rebounds as a reserve.

Three Hofstra players – Luciano, Loftus and Jackson – knocked down three-pointers in the opening quarter to put Hofstra ahead, 26-13. Luciano nearly out-scored the Chanticleers by herself in the quarter, scoring 12 points by shooting 4-of-5 in the period. Hofstra forced eight turnovers to control play.

The Pride and Chanticleers played each other for the first time. Hofstra lost the first game of the San Juan Shootout on Friday, falling to No. 7 Oregon State.

Hofstra will return to the contiguous United States by hosting Buffalo on Thursday at 7 p.m. from the Mack Sports Complex.
