Hofstra won on Opening Day for the sixth time in 10 seasons under Head Coach
Krista Kilburn-Steveskey as the Pride posted a plus-20 rebounding differential against Navy. The Pride notched 52 rebounds against the Mids and earned 20 more free throw attempts. The Pride shot 75 percent from the line to make the difference in the contest.
Sophomore forward
Ashunae Durant notched 17 points and 13 rebounds. If only offensive rebounds counted, Durant still would have completed the double-double as she grabbed a career-high 10 offensive boards in 34 minutes. Fellow frontcourt-mate and red-shirt junior
Anjie White also contributed 13 rebounds to help Hofstra dominate the glass.
While Navy's bench scored just five points, senior
Jakelle King-Gilchrist fell just four points shy of matching her career high by adding 15 points as a reserve. The guard and Florida State transfer shot 6-of-9 from the field and racked up her impressive point total in just 21 minutes. Sophomore guard
Aleana Leon added four points and five rebounds off the bench to give the Pride a major boost when the first unit needed a rest.
Hofstra will face a Stony Brook squad that also won its first game as the Seawolves defeated Iona, 58-53, in the season opener on Friday. Stony Brook shot 40.4 percent from the field in the first game. While Hofstra didn't reach that percentage from the floor in its Opening Day win over Navy, the Pride went18-for-24 from the free throw line, led by junior
Kelly Loftus's six made three-throws which helped steer the outcome in the victory.
Last season, Stony Brook qualified for the WBI under first-year coach Caroline McCombs, winning 17 games in total. The teams will be playing for the first time since the 2010-11 season when Hofstra posted a 84-72 victory.
Hofstra is 8-1 in the all-time series against Stony Brook, which dates to 1969. The teams have matched up once in the postseason (2006 WNIT).
