Nanishka Perez had a huge match with 16 kills and a career-high 18 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a five-set win over Elon on Friday evening at Alumni Gym.
Senior defensive specialist
Corrina Delgadillo was outstanding once again as she notched a career-high in digs for the second consecutive match with 38 in the contest.
The 11 five-set matches this season is a new single season record for the program. Set scores were 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25 and 15-11 in favor of the Pride.
The win improves Hofstra's record to 20-10 overall and 11-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Pride have won five of its last six matches. Elon falls to 6-23 and 2-13 in conference action.
This marks the 25th time in program history that Hofstra has reached the 20-win plateau. The Pride has reached at least 20 wins in three of the last four seasons.
It marked the fourth double-double of the season for Perez. Hofstra also got solid matches out of sophomore middle blocker
Leticia Valente (15 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs) and junior right side
Veronika Kostova (10 kills, 4 digs and 2 blocks). Junior setter
Hannah Klemm had another strong match with 51 assists, five digs and three blocks.
Hofstra looked to be in control as they won the first two sets before Elon rallied back to even the match at two sets each. The Phoenix held an 8-5 lead in the final stanza before the Pride scored six straight points to open up an 11-8 advantage. After Elon got back to within 12-11, the Pride scored the final three points of the match to escape with the victory. The win makes Hofstra 334-14 all-time when winning the first two sets.
Freshman defensive specialist
Luisa Domingues added 20 digs for Hofstra, which also got 16 digs from junior defensive specialist
Sophia Black.
Sydney Busa had 13 kills, seven digs and five blocks for Elon. Sydel Curry tallied 39 assists and 18 digs for the Phoenix.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it closes the regular season at William & Mary. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Notes- Hofstra is 4-0 all-time against Elon. Both matches this season against the Phoenix went to five sets.
- Prior to this season the 2008 squad had the school record for five-set matches with 10.
- The previous career-high for Perez in digs was 17 vs. Delaware on November 9.
- The previous career-high for Delgadillo in digs was 27, done twice, most recently on Monday versus Delaware.
